The School of Professional Studies (SPS) at Columbia University invites applications for full-time positions at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice or Professor of Professional Practice to teach in the MS program in Applied Analytics. The degree prepares graduates to help organizations understand the value of data-driven decision-making, deliver business intelligence through analytics, and lead organizations in implementing change based on insights-driven decisions.

This position will begin on July 1, 2023. This is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

We are seeking high-quality candidates with a graduate degree in data science, computer science, or other quantitative disciplines directly related to data analytics.  Experience mentoring students on consulting projects, where students engage in solving real-world analytics problems with industry partners is a plus. The ability to form partnerships and collaborations with industry stakeholders to develop applied research and foster entrepreneurial ideas is also welcome.

This position will involve regular teaching in the program’s core and elective courses.  

The successful candidate will teach courses related to applied analytics in one or more of the following areas: business and organizational aspects of analytics, technical topics such as database management, natural language processing, cloud computing, and/or programming languages such as JavaScript.  The Associate Professor of Professional Practice/Professor of Professional Practice will also participate in admissions review, enrollment, marketing, instructional design, student mentoring, and overall development of the Applied Analytics program.

Qualifications

A BA/BS is required.   A doctoral degree is strongly preferred.

Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching and professional growth.

Candidates at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have attained a superlative record of teaching and professional expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will:

  1. Hold a doctoral degree in data science, computer science, or other quantitative disciplines directly related to applied analytics. 

  2. Possess 10+ years of professional practice in a change management setting, including leadership roles directing departments or organizations. 

  3. Exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and professional practice and/or scholarship. 

  4. Experience teaching in a graduate program or teaching mid-career professionals preferred.  

  5. Exhibit a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the classroom and professional practice.
