Job Description:
The Department of Family Therapy and Social Work in the School of Education and Human Development invites applications for a full-time, tenure track, Associate Professor position in the COAMFTE- accredited Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy program beginning Fall 2023.
The successful candidate will have the clinical expertise and experience to teach and supervise Master’s students from a Structural Family Therapy perspective. Preference will be given to candidates with the qualifications to assume the role of the Program Director overseeing and administering all aspects of the program as outlined in the COAMFTE accreditation standards, including classroom instruction; curriculum development; and liaison within the Marriage and Family Therapy program and programs within the School of Education and Human Development. The teaching load is 3 courses in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates should demonstrate commitment to innovation and excellence in teaching and the use of technology in the classroom. The MFT Program Director works closely with the MFT Clinical Director/Koslow Center administrator on all issues related to MFT clinical training placements, is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the program meet accreditation standards and completes assessment reports as required.
Candidates must demonstrate experience and a commitment to the profession and practice of marriage and family therapy. Applicants are expected to show evidence of a research/scholarly agenda including attention to social justice, power, oppression and/or health/mental health inequities. The candidate should demonstrate experience in engagement with disadvantaged populations and a commitment to the mission of advancing social justice in teaching, service, scholarship and clinical marriage and family therapy practice.
The mission, philosophy and diversity statements of the MFT program are the fundamental principles from which the educational outcomes of the program derive. These statements are based upon, and are congruent, with: (1) the Jesuit mission of Fairfield University, (2) the conceptual framework of the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) and, (3) the professional, educational and training standards of the field. The Program’s statements clearly articulate the centrality and importance of the concepts of social justice, advocacy and cultural diversity.
Program Mission Statement
The MFT Program at Fairfield University is designed to prepare students for careers as competent professional marriage and family therapists by providing them with a solid conceptual knowledge base and the clinical skills necessary for effective practice. Students are exposed to the broad range of family systems theories and models with a particular emphasis on the utilization of the Structural and Strategic approaches. The program is dedicated to providing a learning context that fundamentally values diversity, nondiscrimination and the promotion of justice. The program seeks to educate students to be socially aware and ethically responsible professionals.
Program Philosophy Statement
The philosophy statement of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program is an extension of the Mission Statement and incorporates the Conceptual Scholar Practitioner Framework of the SEHD and the Ignatian Jesuit values of the University. The Marriage and Family Therapy Program prepares graduates to believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all people and promotes the wellbeing of individuals, couples, families and communities, is committed to serving a diverse society; possesses strong conceptual and clinical knowledge and upholds the highest standards of professional conduct. The Program supports the development of intellectual rigor, personal integrity, multidisciplinary collaboration, informed decision-making, self- reflection and social responsibility.
Responsibilities include:
- teaching courses in the marriage and family therapy program
with an emphasis on Structural Family therapy
- provision of supervision from a Structural Family Therapy
approach
- maintaining a research agenda and publication in peer-reviewed
journals
- service to the program, school, university and profession of
marriage and family therapy
- administrative responsibilities may include:
- scheduling, evaluating, and updating course offerings;
- implementing the conceptual framework and program
objectives;
- recommending teaching assignments, class schedules, and
coordinating these assignments;
- conducting program meetings;
- developing and implementing procedures for advising
students;
- preparing an annual program report, both departmental and
COAMFTE;
- developing and maintaining the structure and content of the
program in accordance with COAMFTE standards state
guidelines;
- preparing COAMFTE accreditation self-study and managing all
aspects of the accreditation process in collaboration with the
Clinical Director;
- identifying and recommending adjunct faculty appointments for
the program;
- selecting, evaluating and supervising the graduate assistants
in collaboration with the Clinical Director.
- Hold a doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from a
COAMFTE accredited program.
- Demonstrate research, scholarship and practice experience with
underserved groups.
- Be licensed or license-eligible as LMFT in the state of
Connecticut.
- Demonstrated capacity to teach across the MFT curriculum
including clinical practice and supervision.
- Demonstrated use of family systems theories that inform the
applicant’s research, teaching, clinical practice and
supervision.
- Have knowledge and experience using Structural and Strategic
Family Therapy models, in teaching and supervision.
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and social justice in
practice, teaching, and/or research.
- Have experience implementing initiatives at
program/departmental/community levels.
- Be active in professional organizations and university
service.
