George Mason University’s Global Affairs Program seeks applicants for an Assistant Director of Global Affairs to begin January 2023. This is 12-month, renewable term (non-tenure-line) appointment. The Global Affairs Program (GLOA) is a large, dynamic, interdisciplinary degree program where faculty from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (such as anthropology, communications, cultural studies, economics, environmental studies, history, sociology, and political science) form a vibrant academic community.

Responsibilities:

• The Assistant Director of Global Affairs carries both teaching and administrative duties; The Assistant Director serves as the undergraduate coordinator for the Global Affairs Program in Mason’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). As undergraduate coordinator, the Assistant Director will be responsible for coordinating and managing the sections of our introductory course GLOA 101 (including serving as a mentor to the graduate lecturers of that course); supervising the internship course and honors in the major sequence; planning program events; taking the lead in undergraduate recruitment and outreach, including in Mason’s Virginia Promise Pathway program and with other community college programs; facilitating freshman and transfer student orientation sessions in the summer and winter; advising Global Affairs majors and working with staff and faculty advisors in the program; submitting curriculum and grade changes; attending college and university meetings; and tending to other requests by the college, university, or the Global Affairs Director related to the undergraduate program. This instructional faculty position carries a teaching load of two courses in each of the Fall and Spring semesters, and one course in the Summer; at least one course each year must be in the major’s introductory course, GLOA 101. Other duties as assigned in consultation with the Director.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD by time of appointment in the field of social sciences or humanities; Teaching experience in a college or university; Some prior knowledge of the study of globalization.

Preferred Qualifications:

• College experience in academic advising and mentoring; College experience in academic administration; College experience in program planning; Demonstrated ability to teach a diverse range of students with interdisciplinary interests; Demonstrated success in working with students of diverse interests and backgrounds.
