The Assistant Vice President for Public Relations will strategically raise the University’s global visibility and advance its reputation in ways that drive recognition and support through the creation of relevant content and effective public relations strategies. Lead content creation by developing a comprehensive and integrated strategy that identifies and articulates high-impact stories while maximizing the University’s impact across multiple channels. Manage a team of public relation strategists, editors, media liaisons, and content producers to communicate the best of Old Dominion University and build upon its strong reputation for research, academic excellence, and active civic engagement. Provide editorial oversight for the University’s homepage, official news bureau, magazines, news stories, e-newsletters, and other media. Work closely with the vice president and other senior leaders to develop communication strategies, facilitate high-level internal communications, and manage issues communications. Build strong relationships with influential audiences through a variety of traditional and new tactics.

 

Master’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field. Significant experience in public relation settings in higher education. Considerable experience in public relations in a supervisory capacity. Several years’ experience in public relations. Considerable knowledge of public relations strategies and tactics. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of best principles and practices in public relations and media relations. Demonstrated ability to manage an office composed of various subunits and supervise a variety of professionals. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with the news media. Demonstrated ability to write and edit well-crafted stories in appropriate journalistic style. Considerable knowledge of English grammar and Associated Press style guide. Strong organizational and strategic media relations skills.
