Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as a Lecturer for the Department of History beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The ideal candidates will have specialized in U.S. History. Letter of interest should address candidate's qualifications for the position and how those qualifications would contribute to student success at UTRGV. Primarily responsible for teaching lower-level history survey courses (such as U.S. History I and II, World History I and II, Mexican American History I and II) and, if needed, an occasional advanced course.

Department Background:
As an integral part of a liberal arts education, history courses introduce students to different historical eras, diverse cultures, famous and ordinary women and men, and a variety of geographical settings. Our courses challenge students to think critically, express themselves clearly, and become informed and responsible citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. The Department of History offers courses in historical methodology, research, world regions, and themes of the human experience. Faculty members engage in research among an international community of peers and share that knowledge in publications and with students. We mentor students in and out of the classroom, guide extracurricular activities, and provide service to our communities. Minimum Qualifications:
The minimum qualification to be considered for this position is a Ph.D. degree in History or a related field of study with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in History from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in history from an accredited institution may apply, but the doctoral degree must be conferred by August 31, 2023.
Lecturer I | No college teaching experience
Lecturer II | 3-5 yrs. full time college teaching experience
Lecturer III | < 5 yrs. full-time college teaching experience
Sr. Lecturer | > 5 yrs. full-time college teaching experience

Preferred Qualification:
Preference will be given to applicants who have a minimum of one year’s experience teaching at an institution of higher education. Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence with innovative course delivery; research agenda is encouraged.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days inlength.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
