    The CSUSB Student Health Center supports students' academic success by providing high quality accessible health and psychiatric care as well as health education and wellness services in a safe, confidential and compassionate environment.

    Job Summary

    Under general supervision, the incumbent will serve as a Triage Nurse at the Student Health Center at the San Bernardino and/or Palm Desert campuses. The Hourly Per Diem Non-Exempt/Registered Nurse will also be responsible for active participation in health education activities, training of health-related personnel, and development of policies, protocols and procedures. Additional duties include participation in health center and campus wide committees when assigned.
  • Utilizing established triage protocols, functions as the telephone/walk-in triage nurse by assessing patients' signs and symptoms to determine appropriate disposition (schedules same-day, urgent or future appointments using EMR) and or treatment.
  • Utilizing standing orders, and under the supervision, the nurse treats common medical conditions, refills routine medications and provides first aid for minor injuries to students, staff, faculty and campus visitors.
  • Responsible for administering flu vaccines and assisting with flu vaccine clinics. Will also assist with administering other immunizations as needed.
  • With prior approval from individual providers will give students normal lab results. When a student has requested a result and that result is not within normal limits will schedule students for appointment with the rendering provider.
  • Utilizing standing orders will evaluate requests for HCG testing including patient assessment, testing, pregnancy options, counseling and appropriate referrals.
  • Responsible for OC refill appointments including vital signs and assessment of possible side effects.
  • Per provider request will contact patients to give information regarding referral, prescriptions, recheck appointments.
  • Prepares patients for medical examinations and treatment. Performs routine laboratory testing such as urinalysis, hemoglobin, glucose, and urine pregnancy tests. Prepares lab samples obtained by medical providers for pick up by the lab. Assists with medical examinations and procedures as requested by clinic medical providers.
  • Administers medications as requested by rendering provider.
  • Provides education counseling on a wide variety of health topics such as STD's, contraception, hypertension.
  • Assists with orientation of new nursing staff members and student interns when assigned.
  • Responsible for administering and reading PPDs. Orders CXR for those with a positive reading or who have prior history of a positive reading. Will give CXR results when they are within normal limits and include education and referral for INH prophylaxis.Will schedule positive CXR with a medical provider.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.

Employment Status:

Part-time (28 Hours per week) , Temporary, “Non-Exempt” position with the possibility of converting to probationary.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics. Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.

  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties.

  • Ability to use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to gain the cooperation of patients, analyze emergency situations and take prompt action.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
  • Ability to sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • A background check (which may include: fingerprinting, checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with the CSU.


Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • No experience is required as this is an entry-level registered nursing classification for recently licensed registered nurses.

License and Certifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California RN license.
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis; respond with therapy to treatment reactions; use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports; gain the cooperation of patients; analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $30.00 - $37.00 Per Hour

Classification Hourly Range: $ 23.22 - $90.79 Per hour
