Job Summary

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Columbus State University invites applications for a Lecturer / Technical Director. Along with teaching, the major responsibilities of the Technical Director are the coordination and supervision of all technical areas of departmental productions related to scenery: including sets, props, special effects and other technical needs. The Technical Director will collaborate with other members of the production team whose primary responsibilities are costumes, makeup, lighting, and sound. The Technical Director supervises the crews related to his/her responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Production Planning
  • Meets with the director and all designers to discuss the director's concept of the production.
  • Works with the designers to begin ordering supplies as designs are approved by the director.
  • Drafts all necessary technical drawings not drafted by the scene designer.
  • Works with the faculty to select crew heads and organize all crews for the production.
  • Develops an overall work schedule to fit the needs of the production.
  • Ensures that the Stage Manager will glow tape the set prior to technical rehearsals.
  • Supervises all crews and keeps the production on schedule and running smoothly.
  • Consults with other members of the production team and establishes deadlines for final changes in the designs for the production.
  • Consults with the faculty and establishes deadlines for the crews to complete their work.
  • Supervises and assists, as required, with all technical areas of the production.
  • Meets with the director, designers, stage manager, and crew heads to discuss and develop the cues and scene shifts of the production.

Technical Rehearsals, Dress Rehearsals, and Performances

The TD is ultimately responsible for a safe and efficient technical program. To achieve these goals, the TD may directly oversee or choose to delegate the following
responsibilities:
  • Supervises all production staff and running crews during final rehearsals.
  • Works with the stage manager and crew heads to maintain discipline backstage and in the control booths during performances.
  • Develops plans for emergencies which could occur during the production and rehearses them with the cast and crews.
  • Remains available during the run of the show to advise and assist, as necessary, in the running of the production.
  • Prepares plans for the strike of the production prior to its closing. A production staff meeting will provide the opportunity to develop strike procedures to the satisfaction of most of the crews.
  • Organizes specific strike procedures and calls. Assigns specific responsibilities to each crew.

Strike
  • Instructs all cast and crews in specific safety procedures to be followed during the strike.
  • With each crew head, supervises the proper storage of all equipment used in the production.
  • Makes certain that all borrowed properties are returned within three days of the strike of the production.
  • Before ending the strike, makes certain that the stage has been cleared and cleaned of all debris and that all curtains, lighting instruments, and sound equipment have been returned to their designated positions.
  • Approves any changes in the strike procedure.
  • Accounts for all supplies and equipment purchased for the production.

Lecturer

Required Qualifications

Candidates are required to have an earned Master's degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Theatre or a closely related field with recent industry experience.
