The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional Internal Medicine leader to join the Department of Medicine as the Professor and Program Leader in Diagnosis in Medicine, to be supported by the prestigious Carolyn Oliver Endowed Chair of Diagnostic Medicine. Successful applicants will be eligible for appointment at the Associate or Professor level, should have significant experience in academic General Internal Medicine, and be board-certified in Internal Medicine.

Dell Medical School is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. The Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016 and graduated this first class in 2020. The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 129 faculty and 68 residents. Our residency includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine. We have fellowship training programs in Gastroenterology, Hematology and Oncology, Palliative Care, and Pulmonary / Critical Care. The Department is comprised of 11 Divisions, and collaborates closely with other Departments in the School of Medicine and across the UT Austin Campus. We are partnered with a number of care delivery organizations in the Austin / Travis County community, including the Seton-Ascension system, Community Care, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for our residents.

JOB SUMMARY

The Professor and Program Leader in Diagnosis in Medicine will be responsible for the development and oversight of a new, innovative program on improving diagnosis in medicine. Established through a generous philanthropic investment, the Diagnostic Excellence Program will see patients with complex, undiagnosed medical issues, and coordinate diagnostic workups and care plans. This program will also serve as a laboratory for improving the diagnostic process. The Professor and Program Leader will collaborate with key internal and external partners to develop this program, reporting to the Executive Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine. The Endowed Professor and Program Leader will also work with the Associate Chairs and Department Director on initiatives related to our clinical, educational, research, and faculty development missions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing a multi-disciplinary Diagnosis in Medicine Program to care for patients with complex and / or undiagnosed health issues
  • Collaborate with community health systems and other Dell Med clinical leaders and partners to develop new an outstanding model of care for patients with undiagnosed health issues
  • Working closely with academic leaders of the Dell Medical School to incorporate learners to the Diagnosis in Medicine Program
  • Develop an assessment strategy for program success, including scholarship related to improving diagnosis, trust and communication, and shared decision making
  • Collaborating with other leaders in the Department of Medicine on quality improvement and patient safety projects related to diagnosis in medicine and communication across all clinical sites

Qualifications

  • MD degree with residency training in Internal Medicine
  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level
  • Significant clinical background in delivering care to patients with complex medical issues
  • Record of academic scholarship
