Union College invites applicants in either Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering at the Associate or Full Professor level to join the College in September 2023 as Inaugural Chair of a new Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Union is ranked #21 by U.S. News and World Report among national undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET and currently offers ABET-accredited degrees in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. Having offered the first civil engineering program in a liberal arts setting in the nation, Union is returning to the discipline as its faculty have approved new programs in Civil Engineering & Environmental Engineering. We thus seek applicants with the skills and interest to build a department and refine the curriculum. This project is part of a strategic initiative, supported by a historic gift, to both broaden Union’s engineering offerings and integrate the study of engineering and computer science with the liberal arts, inside and outside of the classroom, to benefit students across the College. This is an endowed position which will carry a salary supplement and dedicated research funds.

We welcome applicants with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and mentoring undergraduates and to building a diverse and inclusive department. As this is a new department, this search is open with respect to expertise and specialization, though the College currently possesses expertise in the fields of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and hydrology. The new Chair will teach courses in the curriculum as appropriate, including core classes, upper-level courses in areas such as water resources, transportation engineering, construction management, or environmental engineering, as well as electives. In addition, there is an expectation that the Chair will teach at least one course annually to non-engineers. The new Chair will establish a successful research program that incorporates undergraduates; lead the development of the department with respect to curricular refinement as well as recruitment, retention, and development of new faculty; and manage the operations of the department and its programs.

The successful candidate will have a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and will cultivate opportunities for the integration of civil and environmental engineering faculty, course offerings, and students with those in other departments and interdisciplinary programs across the College. We envision a close relationship especially between the new department and our Environmental Science, Policy, and Engineering Program. In addition, consistent with Union’s goal to break new ground with respect to integrating engineering fields with the liberal arts, we welcome applicants who are eager to explore joint programming possibilities with departments and programs in the humanities and social sciences, including with interdisciplinary programs that operate in DEIB spaces with respect to curriculum (e.g., Africana Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies). The successful candidate also will be a partner in increasing the contributions of engineering faculty to the College’s new Complex Questions/Global Challenges and Social Justice common curriculum.
