Job Details

Drew University is seeking applications for qualified candidates for the position of Adjunct Instructor in the English Language Program with INTO Drew University, beginning January 2023. Some openings may be needed for a special half-term program with Saudi and Chinese students starting in mid-October 2022. Instructors will teach classes in the Pathway (PW) and/or Academic English (AE) programs. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and actively support the ELP’s mission and goals. Reports to Academic Director. Appointments are temporary (one semester), but renewable thereafter. This pool will be in effect until January 31, 2023. Individuals wishing to be considered beyond this date must reapply.
  • Adjunct instructors are paid per course per semester: $4,500 per 4-credit course in Pathway Program; $4,500 per 6-contact-hour (per week) course, $3,000 per 4-contact-hour course; $1,500 per 2-contact-hour course in the Academic English Program.
  • Instructors are evaluated each semester on instructional effectiveness and fulfillment of administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach and prepare courses as assigned in fall, spring or summer semesters. Course assignments may be in our Academic English or Pathway programs. The English language learners have different proficiency levels (novice, intermediate and advanced).
  • Teaching assignments may include one or more of the following: Academic English Intensive (reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking), English for Academic Purposes (reading & writing and listening & speaking) on undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional elective courses may be available. Some instructors may also be assigned to teach the American Pop Culture class for first-semester international students in the Pathway program. 

  • Actively support the mission, core values, and teaching philosophies of the English Language Program. Maintain communications with students, administrators, faculty, and other staff.
  • Perform all administrative duties as needed, including testing, rating, orientation, emergency and voluntary subbing, meetings, dissemination and submission of required forms, etc. Keep accurate records of student performance.
  • Be available to students and instructors for 1 hour per week in the office (apart from teaching) for every 2 hours in the classroom between the hours of 8-5.
Required Qualifications:

List the minimum academic requirements for this position: Bachelors required, Masters, preferred
  • M.A. in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Language Teaching Methodology, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field with 18 hours of TESL courses
  • Minimum one year full-time experience teaching in a college-level English language program
  • Excellent teaching, demonstrated by classroom observations, student evaluations, and sample materials
  • Experience with and knowledge of a variety of curricular approaches and methodologies for teaching English as a Second Language to include content-based instruction, English for Academic Purposes
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development activities
  • Advanced proficiency in spoken and written academic English
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

  • Experience creating materials, projects and rubrics for English language learners
  • Evidence of contributions to colleagues' professional development, demonstrated by workshops, collaborative materials development, or other activities
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, collaborative approach to working with others, and strong communication skills
