With an enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students of approximately 4,000, its purpose is to provide students with an excellent education, stimulate inquiry and research, and serve the Pee Dee region, as well as the state. Enrollment at the undergraduate level reflects the diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds of the South Carolina student population; the university also attracts students from other states and abroad.

The successful candidate must have a terminal degree in an academic discipline, as well as a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service commensurate with the rank of professor with tenure. A candidate should have a record of leadership in an academic administrative position, as well as the proven ability to plan and implement strategic initiatives, and to make effective and timely decisions. The Provost reports directly to the President and provides leadership and strategic vision for the entire academic mission of the University in cooperation with the President. The successful candidate will also have a vital role in advancing the identity, mission, and goals of the University to others beyond the immediate University community.  Francis Marion's Provost currently serves as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

All candidate information will be held in strict confidence until the final stage of the search. At that time, the search committee will obtain the permission of the finalists before making their candidacy public and/or contacting references.
