Montgomery County Community College invites applications for the Faculty Diversity Fellowship Program - Advising position.  The Faculty Diversity Fellowship Program - Advising in line with the goals of the Faculty Diversity Fellowship program, the Advisor Diversity Fellow position supports the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, promotes and advances the careers of exceptional scholars from historically underrepresented groups. This program aims to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of the College’s non-teaching faculty and broadening access to the college-advising profession to minority professionals. These positions provide holistic and intensive one-on-one advising as well as group academic, career and college transfer advising to students resulting in a heightened level of student engagement, comprehensive decision-making, and utilization of a vast array of services to support student access, retention, and completion.

The Diversity Fellow is expected to provide workshops to students in a variety of topics such as study skills, academic planning, research and non-cognitive skills, etc. college-wide. The Diversity Fellow will specialize in career planning, academic preparedness as well as mentoring diverse students.

The expectation is that this position will work closely with the College community in our collective efforts to support the College’s student success initiatives and the mission of access, success, and completion.  

*This position requires a minimum of one evening per week from 11am-7pm, and Saturdays as needed from 9am-12pm.  During peak periods evening hours will be extended until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday hours will be 9am-4pm, or as needed.

**This position has college-wide responsibilities and requires travel between all campuses and off-site locations.

***This position requires the candidate to submit the PA Child Abuse, State of PA Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprinting clearances prior to the start of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide students with timely and accurate educational information on degrees, certificates, courses, college policies and procedures, campus and community resources.
  • Provide holistic advising; identify options for students to satisfy degree requirements, evaluate and make recommendations on changes to student programs of study, and assist students to completion.
  • Provide holistic case management services and connect students with community resources to increase retention and completion rates.
  • Guide students in development of effective problem-solving skills, self-advocacy (empowerment), goal setting, and personal responsibility.
  • Conduct student success and new student workshops and presentations in collaboration with key student services and instructional departments.
  • Advise first year students to help them move successfully through the first year at the College; collaborate with faculty to develop services that support first year students.
  • Serve as a mentor to minority students.
  • Write content for student success and advising handbook with emphasis on intrusive advising models and assist with revisions and editing.
  • Work closely with students who are on academic probation to help develop a holistic strategy to help them gain the support they need as related to the College’s satisfactory academic progress policy.
  • Attend all advisor training meetings and present information as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be a member of a historically underrepresented group.
  • Must be considering a career in Student Affairs or in higher education Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, Higher Education Counseling, or other related degree.
  • Must have advising, coaching and/or counseling experience with diverse populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual/Multilingual, Spanish Speaking.
  • Previous work experience with intrusive case management style advising/coaching model
  • Experience working with non-traditional, first-generation, limited income, ethnically diverse individuals or college students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple technologies simultaneously and proficiency in computer applications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to a comprehensive community college philosophy.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately under pressure, and make decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and grant regulations.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in extensive record keeping.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
