Position Summary

The Department of Economics of Bowdoin College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in any subfield of macroeconomics to start July 1, 2023. Although the subfield is open, candidates are expected to offer courses that analyze and suggest solutions to, for example, poverty and unequal economic growth across the world; uneven gains to trade and globalization; debt, monetary, and currency crises; or the disparate economic impacts of climate change. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will teach at least one field course, intermediate macroeconomics, and principles of macroeconomics. Preference given to candidates who will also engage with Bowdoin’s various interdisciplinary programs and departments, such as its public health initiative, Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies, Africana Studies, Asian Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and/or Digital and Computational Studies. PhD in hand by date of appointment is expected.

Bowdoin requires its faculty to have a promise of long-term successful scholarly engagement and a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. (For a description of inclusive excellence, please consult the following resource: Williams, et. al., Toward a Model of Inclusive Excellence ). We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education.

Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully-funded, year-long pre-tenure sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals. Support for teaching, grant-writing, publication, digital initiatives, computing software, conference travel support, and community partnerships in courses is readily available to all faculty. The College also offers robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks.

The Bowdoin community warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the inclusive instruction and support of a diverse student population and who will enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity. We especially encourage people from historically excluded groups to apply. Accessibility during the application and interview stages, as well as once employed, is a priority of the College: https://www.bowdoi n.edu/accessibility/index.html . We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of partners and spouses of members of the faculty.

Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit 1) a cover letter that details your scholarly research agenda and describes your teaching experience and interests; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a 2-page statement that describes your teaching approaches and how your teaching, scholarship, and mentorship supports our commitment to equity and inclusion; 4) evidence of teaching effectiveness, e.g. teaching evaluations; 5) a sample of written work; 6) the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation. Letter writers will be automatically contacted upon submission of your application.

Review of applications will begin November 10, 2022 and continue until the position is filled.
