Position Summary

The University of Georgia ( UGA ) is hiring seven tenure-track faculty in Environmental Artificial Intelligence (AI) through a Presidential Faculty Hiring Initiative with four positions that started in Fall 2022, and three positions to start in August 2023. The faculty positions are distributed within Franklin College of Arts and Sciences in the Departments of Geography , Marine Sciences , Statistics and the Anthropology . The Environmental AI cluster will strengthen and expand UGA’s position as a global leader in atmospheric, terrestrial, and oceanic processes across wide-ranging spatial and temporal scales.

As part of the cluster hire, the Department of Marine Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in Marine Conservation and Sustainability, who applies artificial intelligence to focus on the science of protecting, recovering and sustainably using coastal and marine resources. Possible research areas include (but are not limited to) fisheries management, marine protected areas, marine biodiversity, ocean health, and coastal adaptation strategies. The candidate’s research program should involve collection and analysis of large data sets, such as those from sensor networks and automated samplers.

We are particularly interested in candidates who integrate field and computational work and can complement our existing expertise in marine, estuarine and coastal systems. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to our new and growing Ocean Science B.S. program and to the Marine Sciences graduate programs by supporting research and mentoring of students and postdocs, and by teaching courses in areas such as Marine Biology, Marine Policy, and Data Science, as well as advanced courses in their area of specialization.

About the College/Unit/Department

The Dept. of Marine Sciences has faculty located on both the UGA main campus in Athens, where this position will be located, and at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, GA. In addition to the Environmental AI cluster, there are opportunities to directly interact with faculty in the Odum School of Ecology, the Center for Integrative Conservation Research, the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and the School of Engineering, as well as multiple departments in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and to take advantage of resources at both Skidaway Institute and the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island.
