Schedule Information: This position teaches a standard load of 15 credit hours per semester (30 credits per academic year). This may include release time to be given for chair/coordinator duties. Classes are may be offered in day, evening, or online modalities. Instructors are also expected to hold weekly office hours on campus to be available for student support.

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties: The Department of Music at Harper College invites applications for a tenure-track full time faculty position. The position will oversee our general education courses making sure we are covering concepts throughout Music history while focusing on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in our student’s educational experience. Other departmental responsibilities include directing and/or developing ensembles that are academically beneficial and relevant to our community of students, and various departmental responsibilities including advising, outreach and recruitment. Candidates should possess expertise in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, as well as coordinating ensembles, vocal and/or instrumental, of varying genres.

Responsibilities of the position:
  • Teaching general education courses in music including Music Literature, Music Appreciation, American Music and more.
  • Reviewing course materials, providing coordination for all general education courses, and advising on needed curriculum changes ensuring our courses meet our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Infusing technology into pedagogical approaches to teaching.
  • Directing ensembles, vocal and/or instrumental.
  • Creating new ensembles that are of relevance to students of our surrounding community.
Departmental Duties:
  • Coordinate all vocal and/or instrumental areas.
  • Assist with advisement for all students pursuing the AFA in Music, ensuring all of our students meet the degree requirements in their coursework, and helping coordinate their successful transfer to a four-year institution.
  • Schedule courses for each academic year.
  • Assist with budgetary needs and goals for the department.
  • Build articulation agreements with surrounding schools.
  • Surveying needs for instrumental repair and replacements.
  • Organizing and digitizing our Music library.
  • Curating, hosting and attending concerts.
  • Be a representative for our accreditation in the National Association of Schools of Music.
Educational Requirements: At least a Master’s degree in Music is required with experience in ethnomusicology, musicology or music history coursework. Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Music History or the equivalent preferred.

Experience Requirements: Applicants should have previous experience teaching music at the college level.
