- Randolph-Macon College, a private, co-educational liberal arts
institution, invites applications for Standardized Patients in our
Physician Assistant (PA) Program and our Nursing Program. The
Standardized Patient (SP) is a person trained to portray a patient
in a realistic and consistent, or “standardized,” way during
encounters that simulate actual patient care scenarios. SPs will
interact with PA and Nursing learners in a variety of patient
scenarios for the instruction and assessment of clinical skills and
clinical decision-making. Through training provided by PA Program
and / or Nursing Program personnel, SPs will consistently and
accurately recreate a patient history in response to learner
questioning and, in some cases, provide feedback for learners in
their communication and physical exam skills. The physical exam
will be limited, non-invasive, and clearly defined prior to the SP
event. The specific ‘character’ needs vary by SP event, and
frequency of work will vary based on the needs of the PA Program
and Nursing Program.
Responsibilities:
- Simulate patient cases in response to questioning by learners based on a specific defined scenario
- Flexibility in role assignment to include both physical and mental health scenarios
- Undergo a limited and non-invasive physical exam, which may include maneuvers like listening to the heart or looking in the ear
- Accurately complete checklists and other assessments to evaluate learner performance
- Participate in training prior to an SP event
- Work cooperatively with learners, faculty, and staff
- Must be over 18 years of age, reliable, and be accessible by phone and email
- Flexible schedule, as most activities will occur during business hours, Monday through Friday
- Prior acting interest/experience preferred for the Nursing Department role
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology for the Nursing Department role
- Proven relationship building skills
- Ability to be punctual and reliable to meet scheduling requirements
- Ability to maintain confidentiality to uphold the consistency of the learning process
- Ability to memorize and verbally convey basic demographic / background information
