JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Director - Center for Design (CfD) is responsible for leading, coordinating, and publicizing the CfD's activities, planning and spaces, for helping to cultivate an active environment of collaboration and communication, and for facilitating connections with other groups and organizations, both at NU (especially other CAMD's Centers and all departments and groups involved in CfD's research projects) and outside the university (i.e. the design community), with a focus on the Boston area. With the CfD director and core faculty members, participates in strategic and tactical planning activities, grant writing and both internal and external fund raising, and maintains oversight budgeting and hiring processes, in coordination with appropriate staff in the Dean's office (I.e., research development, finance and administration, etc.).

Leads the design and organization of outreach programs and events including workshops, speaker series, and community events (e.g. CfD Conversations, Design Research Week …), with support and participation from core and affiliate faculty members and CAMD's mark-com offices; teaches technical workshops and advises students and faculty on research development, internal and external grants management. Leads the oversight and mentoring of the CfD Fellows and resident students, managing all aspects of hiring and supervision, and providing training on both pedagogical and technical skills. Contributes to the CfD's active research culture by collaborating on grant-funded projects, publishing original research, curating resources for digital scholarship on the CfD websites and media channels, with a focus on design research tools and methods.

May participate in specific CfD collaborative research activities and contribute to the body of knowledge within CAMD and in connection with other colleges and departments across NU and the design community in the Boston area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and skills required for this position are normally obtained through a Master's degree in a field related to design and preferably with related experience. Knowledge of the field of experience and service design and skills to manage and lead applied-research projects and workshops. Organizational abilities, strong communication skills, and administrative and project management experience required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

1 CfD administrative and management work: Oversees budget, hiring, events planning, space maintenance and management, website and media coordination, and financial management - in collaboration with dedicated CfD and CAMD staff members. Maintains documentation for all CfD processes, regularly report on CfD activities to stakeholder communities, and supervise all student and fellows onboarding.

2) CfD research/project and grant planning and management: With CfD Director and core faculty members, participates in strategic planning process, seedling grant programs, and oversees event programming. Carry out CfD outreach and engagement activities including supervising students, maintenance of current information and scholarly/pedagogical resources on the CfD website and regular communications with CfD community.

3 CfD pedagogical support activities: Lead the organization of specialized CfD workshops, develop and teach seminars on research skills and methods, and advise on faculty- and student-led projects.

4) Participation in specific CfD collaborative research projects: e.g. carry out research activities, showcase work, attend research conferences, publish papers.
