SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Although this position is located in Washington, DC, SAIS has campuses in Bologna, Italy and Nanjing, China.
The Language Studies Program (LSP) contributes to the school’s mission of enabling its students to better understand the world and improve it through the instruction of language and culture in the context of international relations. The DC campus currently offers instruction in 10 languages including English. As part of the school graduation requirements, MAIR students need to pass a language proficiency exam in one of the languages taught at SAIS. The LSP is responsible for the language proficiency assessment of these students. To fulfill its mission, the LSP works in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, Admissions and Student Affairs.
We are seeking an English Program Coordinator. The position will oversee English language instruction at the advanced level for its non-native graduate student population. English language courses have an average enrollment of 114 students per semester. Courses offered range from Advanced-Mid through Superior levels. In addition, the individual in this position will administer placement tests for the non-native English speaking admitted and entering students and language proficiency exams in order for students to meet their degree requirements for graduation. The minimum language proficiency required for graduation is performance at the Advanced-High sub-level for Speaking and at the Superior level for Reading, Writing and Listening (ACTFL scale). The English Language Coordinator is directly responsible for the academic and administrative organization of English language training and support and developing and overseeing the English language curriculum and instruction. The coordinator provides support for the Summer and Pre-Term programs and the Writing Center.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Program Management (25%)
  • Run the day-to-day operations of English language training.
  • Serve as point of contact for all incoming, first year, and graduating students for English requirements.
  • Provide English language academic advising to students.
  • Maintain a student database that includes the students’ proficiency records.
  • Oversee English language testing for newly admitted students to determine conditional admission to the school.

Language Faculty Supervision (15%)

  • Supervise the adjunct English language faculty.
  • Recruit and recommend hiring, renewals and cancellations of English part-time and adjunct faculty to the Director of the Language Program.
  • Deliver training workshops to the English language faculty, as needed.
Curriculum and Assessment (20%)
  • Develop the curriculum and instructional materials for English language training in topics relevant to the study of International Relations.
  • Prepare, design and administer the English placement and proficiency exams.
  • Hire certified English language examiners.
  • Teach two sections of advanced-level courses of English in both fall and spring, with a specific emphasis on the development of written and oral skills for academic purposes. through content-based instruction in topics of International Relations.
  • Teach two sections of Pre-Term English in summer.
Writing Center Management (15%)
  • In conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, oversee the operation and services of the SAIS Writing Center.
  • Hire, train, and supervise writing tutors.
  • Develop writing resources and offer workshops for targeted student populations.
  • Work with faculty to address student writing needs.
  • Hold individual consultations with students in need of writing assistance, as time permits.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree required, Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • Four to seven years of related experience.
  • Experience managing an English language program at the college level—graduate level preferred.
  • Experience delivering blended and online language instruction.
  • Excellent oral communication skills in order to interact with students, faculty and all levels of administration from diverse cultures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, course learning management tools (Canvas), and multimedia authoring tools.
  • Previous experience managing an English Writing Center preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
