The Office of Undergraduate Studies invites applications for the inaugural position of Assistant Dean for The Center for First-Generation Success in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. From admission to graduation, the units of the Office of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Utah provide every student with an exceptional educational experience that empowers them to lead transformational lives wherever their educational and professional futures take them.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Success and Transformative Experiences, the Assistant Dean provides direct leadership and vision for the Center for First-Generation Success, develops goals and measurable outcomes, manages professional staff, represents Undergraduate Studies on various taskforces and committees, engages in research about first-generation students and other duties related to the supporting those who identify as first-generation. As such, through strategic partnerships, the Assistant Dean will work to enhance the campus culture to support and celebrate first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Utah.

This position will provide direct leadership to a portfolio of programs that include the First-Generation Scholars learning community, the Impact Scholars program that supports alumni of the foster system interested in pursuing higher education, and a scholarship program. Through these programs and collaboration with many campus units, the Assistant Dean will engage in the development and implementation of experiences that foster a strong and supportive relationship between the institution and students from traditionally underserved populations. Promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness are essential to the success of this position and the programs within the Center.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time, Day

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and supervision for all programs in the Center for First-Generation Success toward improving the access, retention, and completion of first-generation students and other identified student populations Establish consistent systems for tracking and reporting on student programs and outcomes utilizing measurable information on participation, retention, and graduation rates Identify promising practices that enhance the collegiate experiences of first-generation students toward increasing their retention, persistence, timely graduation, and professional preparation Conduct research to understand how best to serve the first-generation student population at the University of Utah Collaborate with the campus partners to facilitate the social, emotional, and educational development of first-generation students and promote a more diverse and welcoming campus community Liaise with staff and faculty to ensure the unique needs of first-generation students are communicated to increase awareness and support across campus Drive short and long-range planning; program development and implementation; assessment, data collection, and data analysis; and the timely delivery of projects, programs, and services that cultivate first-generation student learning and success Successfully manage and develop staff through one-on-one meetings, professional guidance, and mentorship Facilitate development workshops and informational presentations that are aimed at developing cultural competence and understanding of the lived experience of those who identify as first-generation Fiscal oversight of the CFGS including but not limited to: budget oversight and projections, budget management, federal regulation compliance, analyzing, interpreting and reporting on accounts, cost analysis, processing purchases and payroll, and ensuring financial deadlines are met. Engage in professional development activities that will enhance the CFGS and its programs Partner with the Office of Admissions and external organizations to create recruitment opportunities for first-generation students Seek and obtain supplementary funding to support student persistence and enrichment opportunities. Plan and implement campus-wide celebrations of first-generation students including National First-Generation Day Work to establish, manage, and maintain a charter for Alpha, Alpha, Alpha (Tri-Alpha) a first-generation honor society Perform other duties assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, education leadership, or equivalency; six to eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required. Doctorate level or terminal degree in a related area preferred. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description
