Physics Job Description

The Smith College Department of Physics is looking to hire a course instructor from the local area this coming Spring 2023 semester to teach our undergraduate course PHY 318 Electrodynamics (at the level of Griffith's Electrodynamics).

Responsibilities

Prepare course material including course syllabus, reading assignments, homework assignments, and exams: conduct classes that include opportunities for active learning: hold office hours, respond to student email; and grade student assignments. Examples of active learning opportunities include inclusion of in-class small group problem solving sessions and/or asynchronous directed reading and discussion of the course textbook outside of class. Members of our department are available to serve as mentors for new instructors looking to strengthen their teaching skills prior to seeking a full time job in physics education; course notes and assignments from previous instructors are also available.

Qualifications

Candidates should either have a Ph.D. or be in a PhD. degree seeking program in Physics or a closely related field (such as Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics). Preference will be given to candidates with some prior teaching experience as well as knowledge of and interest in active learning methods. Good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Smith requires up to date vaccinations — including COVID-19 — for all instructors.
