Department of Nursing

Doctor of Nursing (DNP) Graduate Program Director

Inequities and health disparities are a major public health threat and demand a concerted, interdisciplinary effort. At the College of Public Health, we dedicate ourselves to public health in all its parameters, from epidemiology to nursing, from social work to rehabilitation sciences. Social justice has always driven our work: This understanding that individual outcomes are intricately tied to the larger systems we inhabit is the foundation of our college. Temple University College of Public Health’s interprofessional culture fosters collaboration both within and outside the College. We value differences among our faculty and believe that we can better serve and understand our Philadelphia community through the diversity of our individual faculty and our disciplines. Join us in our mission to develop progressive, compassionate researchers, practitioners, and clinicians to build a better tomorrow, grounded in creating the environments and health infrastructure that will make us the healthiest nation.

The Position. The Department of Nursing seeks a nurse professional experienced in developing and leading graduate nursing curricula with an interprofessional focus, and a prior record of teaching graduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels.  The Program Director has responsibility for developing and finalizing course schedules, working with graduate advisors and Undergraduate Program Director in recruiting students and facilitating student progress, leading undergraduate program review and annual reporting, coordinating accreditation activities, facilitate professional development opportunities for students, and attends monthly Program Director and Undergraduate Council meetings. In addition, the program director works closely with department chair in annual faculty review and professional development and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education.  The PD will conduct other duties as needed and teach relevant courses.

We value diversity and seek individuals committed to inclusion in education and professional practice.  Under new leadership, we seek leaders who will contribute to the continuous development of a positive culture within the department and college. The ideal candidate for this position is a positive and passionate nurse leader committed to academic excellence and training the next generation of nurse clinicians, practitioners, and researchers.

Qualifications and Interests.  Candidates should have earned a terminal degree in nursing, hold current nursing licensure preferably as an APRN or be eligible in Pennsylvania, and bring at least 5 years clinical/practice experience.  We prefer candidates with at least 3 years academic teaching experience, including didactic courses in person or online as well as clinical teaching/supervision in hospital and community health settings. Applications from experienced program directors are highly desirable, however we will consider applicants with career trajectory and preparation for academic administrative positions. Candidates will satisfy expectations for the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. Classification of the appointment as tenure or non-tenure track will depend on the qualifications and preferences of candidates.  COVID-19 vaccinations are required for employment at Temple University unless granted a religious or medical exemption (see www.temple.edu/coronavirus).

The Department.  As of July 2022, Dr. Chaudron Carter Short has been appointed Chair and Director of the Department.  This unique and strategic appointment of a health system executive who also serves as Chair of the Department will provide nursing students an exceptional opportunity to work alongside Temple nurses to gain critical clinical training. We are also excited to strengthen our already deep ties between The College of Public Health and Temple University Health System. The Department aims to be a leading force in community-engaged, collaborative efforts to achieve health equity and a quality of life for all, preparing a diverse nursing workforce who excel in leadership, practice, research and scholarship. We aspire to provide excellence in academic programming that is responsive to the health needs of individuals and populations, within the context of community, defined as a social and physical environment where living occurs. We are committed to the highest level of caregiving that is prevention-oriented and evidence-based and provided in collaboration with the community and other professionals and disciplines.

We enroll nearly 500 students annually and offer 2 accredited programs. Our 8-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, with freshmen admission is recognized for its high NCLEX pass rate, clinical affiliations with outstanding health care facilities in the Philadelphia area with a service-learning focus. Our Doctor of Nursing Practice program includes post-baccalaureate and post-master’s options with concentrations in Adult Gerontology Primary Care and Family-Individual across the Lifespan. The post-master’s program prepares graduates for leadership roles in a variety of settings. Expansion of graduate program offerings is anticipated and will include additional DNP specialties, post-masters’ certificates, and a master’s direct entry program for non-nursing college graduates.
