Harpur College of Arts & Sciences, Binghamton University (SUNY), seeks an expansive, energetic, and collaborative leader with a forward-looking vision, an empathic leadership style, and a commitment to positioning the arts at the center of a public liberal arts institution to become the Founding Director of the new School of the Arts at Harpur College. The new School of the Arts provides a uniquely interdisciplinary and academically high-caliber arts experience for its students and offers its graduates the skills and resilience that are needed to succeed in careers in or outside of the art world.
The Founding Director will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with university leadership, faculty, staff, students, and the greater Binghamton arts community to establish a School of the Arts comprising the existing arts departments within Harpur College: Art and Design, Art History, Cinema, Music, and Theatre, and with participation from the Creative Writing Program, the Material and Visual Worlds Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence, and the Binghamton University Art Museum, and other cognate units. The Founding Director will play a pivotal role in the advancement of Binghamton University as a top destination for stellar arts students and faculty while positioning the arts at the center of a public liberal arts education through the leadership of all administrative aspects of the establishing the school; stewardship of the arts facility's renovation; strategic academic planning with arts faculty and students; creative and extensive marketing, student recruitment, fundraising initiatives; and engagement with the vibrant arts community in Binghamton and beyond.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience and success in the following areas:
• MFA, DMA, MM, PhD or other terminal degree, or creative or professional activity commensurate with appointment as an associate or full professor, in an academic department
• Experience teaching in an arts field at the university level
• A recognized and distinguished record of creative practice with national/international public and professional visibility.
• A record of achievement warranting a tenured appointment in Harpur College
• Evidence of success in promoting access, equity, and inclusion
• Evidence of leadership, ideally at an institution of higher education
• Experience in development and/or grant writing
• Track record of successful collaboration
