The University of Southern Indiana (USI) seeks a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) to manage strategic marketing efforts in alignment with USI’s Strategic Plan goals to elevate the reputation and visibility of USI regionally, nationally and beyond. Reporting to the Vice President for Marketing and Communication, the CMO is expected to be a strategic leader both within the department and at the University-wide level. The CMO is responsible for developing and shaping data-informed institutional and programmatic marketing strategy and planning, integrating marketing efforts, unifying messaging, advancing the University’s image, and guiding a diverse team of Content Marketing Specialists to ensure successful execution of those efforts.


Essential Functions include but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with senior leadership to translate institutional strategic objectives into focused, effective, and measurable marketing strategies and tactics
  • Develops and continually expands a broad knowledge and thorough understanding of the market trends and forces shaping the brand
  • Develops a cohesive, professional marketing team that leverages its talents and builds a reputation for excellence, collaboration and results
  • Reports activities and progress on major projects and/or marketing campaigns to the Senior Leadership Team and occasionally the Board of Trustees
  • Serves as a primary point-of-contact for third-party agency partners, freelancers and other vendors as needed
  • Offers a keen eye for operational efficiency and optimal use of resources; the ability to forecast, develop and oversee the Marketing Strategy budget
  • Reviews and maintains University brand standards and guidelines and ensures consistency in the institution’s brand identity and messaging
  • Collaborates closely with other offices ensuring that marketing campaigns are consistent in all communication channels, including digital, print, video and social media


Essential Knowledge & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of experience as a marketing professional, with significant leadership experience envisioning, developing and implementing a successful and comprehensive integrated marketing program across an enterprise with multiple constituencies and a wide variety of audiences; master’s degree in relevant discipline preferred.
  • Experience in marketing and/or communications in higher education or non-profits preferred.
  • Proven track record of leading in a culturally competent manner, working with diverse groups, and fostering an understanding of and respect for diverse cultural perspectives and demonstrating an honest respect for all individuals.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to problem solve and facilitate meetings, as well as experience working collectively to achieve positive results and ability to perform multiple tasks in a calm, effective manner, even under demanding conditions such as multiple priorities and short-notice deadlines.
  • Experience developing, planning, and leading complex initiatives including change management and organizational transformation.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication, interpersonal skills and an ability to listen to divergent views while building consensus and collegiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to use imagination and emotional intelligence while engaging with others in problem-solving.
  • Ability to craft and defend positions despite critiques, persuasively describing evidence and rationales with campus partners.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work at both the macro strategic level as well as the micro detail level while setting priorities and managing work and deadlines at an executive level.
  • High levels of energy, creativity, initiative, and innovation with an exceptional work ethic that demonstrates commitment to teamwork and eagerness and ability to take on challenges, learn new skills and expand knowledge across multiple areas of expertise.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Google Analytics, Sprout (or similar) and CMS preferred.
  • A record of success in managing a team of professionals to their highest potential.
