The University of Southern Maine invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. 

Reporting to the President, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic officer of the university and its recognized academic programs in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; College of Management and Human Service; and College of Science, Technology, and Health. 

The next Provost will join the University of Southern Maine (USM) and the academic leadership team to provide leadership in advancing the university through excellence and innovation, building an inclusive campus culture, and building an intellectually engaged collegial community that is committed to fostering learner success.  We will hire a leader who understands the USM Service Promise: Student Focused Every Day and is fully committed to our core values: Respect & Care, Integrity, Equity and Responsiveness.

This is a full-time position with frequent work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends).  The annual compensation range for this position is $200,000 - $225,000 commensurate with experience.  The primary office is located on our Portland Campus with expectation of work/service on Gorham and Lewiston/Auburn Campuses.

Required Qualifications:

  • A collaborative and compassionate leader who is also an advocate with the ability to mobilize and implement positive change with a commitment to serving that for which they are responsible.  An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and a record of teaching and scholarship previously recognized with appointment as a tenured full professor or scholarly accomplishments to warrant appointment as tenured full professor at USM.  A strong commitment and demonstrated record of success in promoting and supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility to support building community and belonging. A demonstrated track record of creativity and innovation in developing and implementing strategies and solutions to meet the needs of a complex organization and those of that organization’s stakeholders. A strong academic administrative record that demonstrates effectiveness in collaboration, conflict resolution, listening skills, sound judgment, and excellent analytic skills and experience with program development, change management, accreditation (at the program or university level), and academic planning. A deep understanding of the current issues facing higher education and their ramifications and opportunities in Maine, nationally and internationally.  And how these define our work as a public regional comprehensive university. Excellent interpersonal skills for engaging with/leading students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners. A record of transparent decision-making that values shared governance. Commitment to regular consultation and integrity in the handling of all academic matters as well as the ability to effectively partner with a talented group of deans and other campus and system leaders.
