Job Description

A Telecommunications Technician maintains and updates telecommunications systems used widely throughout Fort Hays State University. Organizes, drafts, and administers telecommunications actions for the university. Interacts and negotiates with vendors and other external organizations in order to secure telecommunications products and services. Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, pay attention to detail, problem solve, and prioritize work.

Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a High School Diploma, or equivalent, as well as one year of experience in telecommunications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Cat6 Ethernet wiring and fiber optical cabling
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods used in general maintenance and repair work
  • Multiple years of experience regarding the set-up, configuration, and optimization of telecommunications and data communications equipment
  • Working knowledge of network protocols, operating systems, and industry standards
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience with presenting information and trainings to groups and/or individuals

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and update the campus phone and voicemail system. Complete requests from end users and keep accurate records of maintenance, upgrades, and repairs.
  • Maintain, upgrade, and repair wiring infrastructure.
  • Analyze technical manuals and diagrams to learn and connect microcomputer or terminal to data communication lines.
  • Test communication lines to ensure that specifications are met using testing instruments such as a voltmeter and data scope.
  • Disassembling equipment, inspecting and testing wiring to locate and repair problems.
  • Designing wiring plans for new buildings and building renovations for data and voice communications.
  • Preparing bid specifications for wiring supplies and equipment required for new buildings and building renovations for data and voice communications and placing orders for the same.
  • Pulling Fiber Optical Cabling inside and outside buildings.
  • Measuring, cutting, splicing and installing wires and cables.
  • Enter commands into computer to test telecommunication and data communication equipment.
  • Reviewing and managing work orders to move, change, install, repair, or remove data communications equipment such as telephones, cables and wires.
  • Developing and maintaining documentation/ records of cable data for the campus premise distribution system.
  • Suggesting and enforcing changes to plans and strategies associated with the evolution of technology used for voice infrastructure.
  • Investigate, evaluate, appraise, and endorse new technologies and other items that can be used to improve function and efficiency.
  • Institute, arrange, and manage physical or digital IT infrastructures in order to comply with university, municipal, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist with developing long-term strategies to accommodate the future needs of the university's telecommunications network.
  • Work in conjunction with stakeholders, outside vendors (electricians, carpenters, etc.) and other key personnel to ensure that construction and renovation projects are successfully completed on time and on budget.
  • Acquire the services of outside contractors, when necessary.
  • Must be able to work alone or in a team environment.
