RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Plants, cultivates, fertilizes, waters, and sprays ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers. Mows and edges lawns. Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and cleans trash from assigned areas including parking lots. Prepares and treats soils for planting. Maintains hoses, tools, supplies, and equipment in proper condition and repair. Trims trees, hedges, shrubs, and erect tree supports. Operates and performs minor maintenance on small power operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment. Submits daily labor cards. May assist in the preparation of events. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions. May drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties. Provides lead work direction to unskilled assistants. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

Experience: One year experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge or proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers as well as the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Abilities: Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California> Ability to provide instruction to unskilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Must be able to lead, analyze, and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations required by the position. Must possess interpersonal skills in order to interact and communicate effectively with all management, staff, and co-workers. Must interpret a wide variety of written rules and regulations. Ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program; must have the ability to provide proof of eligibility to lawfully operate a motor vehicle in the state of California. Must be able to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs which may include evening and weekend hours. This position requires full range of motion and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate sized equipment up to 50 lbs., bending, climbing, reaching, and applying force; work may involve exposure to hazardous materials.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Hiring Range: $3,500 - $3,925 per month
