Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Senior Dean of College Planning & Institutional Effectiveness, plan, organize, and direct college success and equity planning and implementation to advance the College's strategic goals and the District's commitment to equity-minded student success; facilitate the implementation of the College's strategic plan and equity and success initiatives with the goal of reducing and ultimately eliminating equity gaps; provides leadership in other college planning and implementation efforts as they relate to student equity; supervise and evaluate the performance of certificated and classified personnel. Leads and advances a college culture of diversity, equity and inclusion at the college.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students with an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes. Demonstrated commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management. Deep knowledge of critical issues of diversity and inclusion including experiences with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) practices. Proven ability to articulate a mission, vision, and related planning components based on the unique needs of an institution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee campus-wide professional development opportunities needed to develop and implement evidence-based practices which lead to equitable outcomes.
  • Collaborate with faculty professional development coordinators to provide training in culturally relevant pedagogy, equity-minded classroom strategies, unconscious and implicit bias, cultural humility, and other related topics.
  • Facilitate relevant, courageous, and respectful campus dialogue and foster awareness and appreciation of the value of diversity and inclusion, and to empower individuals to take action in their respective roles.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs and Student Services to support the infusion of culturally relevant pedagogy and practices into the college curricula and programs.
  • Partner with the Senior Dean of College Planning & Institutional Effectiveness and the District Office of Research and Planning to integrate disaggregated data and an equity mindset into all research, planning implementation and assessment processes, including campus climate surveys and the development and tracking of college performance indicators.
  • Provide consultation to campus leadership and constituents on institutional matters related to diversity, inclusion, and educational equity.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to align SEA, Guided Pathways, and other Vision for Success initiatives into an intentionally cohesive strategic framework of programs, services, policies and processes, which are student-centered, equitable, and inclusive.
  • Co-chair both the Student Success & Equity and Professional Development participatory governance committees; serve in an advisory role to the Planning & Institutional Effectiveness governance committees.
  • Oversee, organize, and implement a cohesive student success and equity program in accordance with legal requirements, district policies and sound instructional and student services principles and practices.
  • Establish overall goals, objectives and plans; initiate and participate in success and equity program planning; communicate statutes, district and college policies and philosophies to division staff and the college community.
  • Support college-wide planning and inform decision making, student learning and service outcomes, and determine implications of college practices, policies and measures, and procedures.
  • Supervise and coordinate assigned curriculum planning and development; utilize available resources to develop new or revised curriculum; evaluate and recommend instructional materials, equipment and facilities.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement strategies, services and initiatives with other college departments to address disparities in educational access and success, especially for under-served students.
  • Develop processes, produce and implement strategies to effectively implement success and equity Professional Development; assess training needs and evaluate outcomes.
  • Communicate and interpret strategic plan priorities, objectives, and program offerings to students, staff, faculty, community organizations, and others.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to assigned faculty and staff participating in success, equity, and inclusion initiatives and projects.
  • Work with appropriate faculty and staff to ensure college-wide coordination for student success and equity initiatives.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to assigned programs, focused on disproportionately impacted populations.
  • In accordance with Governing Board policy; plan and coordinate orientation and in-service education for professional development of program faculty and staff.
  • Responsible to planning, coordination, and implementation of college-wide initiatives relating to equity and inclusion, leadership, and development of faculty and staff.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on college strategic priorities and other success, equity, and inclusion initiatives and activities for college-wide retreats, councils, committees, Academic and Classified Senates, and Governing Board.
  • Prepare and assign program budgets and submit through appropriate channels for approval; monitor and control assigned program-operating budgets; initiate special fund requests; determine need and priority for capital equipment and materials.
  • Administer and implement district and college rules, regulations, policies and procedures; assist in implementing contract provisions negotiated by the Governing Board and recognized bargaining units representing employees.
  • Serve as a member of district, site or other committees and task forces.
  • Participate in public information activities to promote and publicize total instructional and student services programs; respond to inquiries regarding curriculum or course offerings and services provided.
  • Prepare catalog material, class schedules, publications, program information, and other materials to communicate implementation of new programs and initiatives to advance the College's mission and strategic priorities; recommend and implement new programs and activities to advance the College and District's commitment to student access, success, and equity.
  • Prepare and provide data, reports, and presentation to support the college's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success by closing equity gaps.
  • Leads in the review of policies, procedures, programs and staff engagement that enhances equity and professional and leadership development.
  • Assure responsiveness of assigned special programs and student services functions to the overall needs of the campus, students, faculty and administrators.

  • Participate in the search, screen and selection process for contract employees.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the resolution of student, instructor and staff conflicts and problems.
  • Perform related duties as assigned regarding assigned programs as necessary; coordinate programs with business, industry, community organizations and other educational institutions.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: Master's degree from an accredited institution plus five years of achievement in management, supervision or leadership programs, departments or divisions within an institution of higher education, with emphasis in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned.

  • Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
  • Lead college-wide efforts to reframe inequities as a problem of practice and to view the elimination of inequities as an individual and collective responsibility.
  • Encourage positive race-consciousness and embrace human difference.
  • Collaborate with faculty coordinators on providing professional development opportunities that foster a culturally responsive teaching environment.
  • Thoughtfully build relationships to promote buy-in and participation among colleagues for equity related projects and activities.
  • Effectively engage and support historically and racially minoritized groups by addressing issues of inequity and work toward creating a culturally responsive, affirming, and validating environment.
  • Develop and maintain an inclusive work environment that fosters diversity, respect and engagement.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Education Code, Title 5 and other administrative regulations and the ability to apply these regulations. Sensitivity to all facets of the community including the needs of various groups which comprise it.
  • Ability to successfully delegate, ensure adherence to College and District policies, practices and procedures, hold others responsible yet instill confidence among the faculty and staff.
  • Ability to exercise academic leadership to advance the College's mission.
  • Facilitate communication and understanding of perspectives among faculty, staff, and students, within the framework of a multi-college district.
  • Commitment to the community college concept, including the open door philosophy and a diverse curriculum for a heterogeneous student population.
  • Ability to participate in the Community College planning process while participating in the achievement of the goals and priorities of the District as a whole.
