RECYCLING PROGRAM SPECIALIST*
Santa Monica College is excited to recruit a qualified Recycling Program Specialist to support the College's mission of providing a sustainable learning environment who also contributes to the global community. The immediate vacancy is scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., 40 hours per week, 12 months per year on the Santa Monica College Main Campus.

The established eligibility list will remain in effect for one year. Please read this job bulletin in its entirety for minimum qualifications, recruitment and testing information.

*The Recycling Program Specialist classification is currently under review and duties may be updated pending Personnel Commission approval.

The Position
Under general supervision, positions in this classification develop, implement, and monitor the District's waste diversion programs to ensure compliance with applicable laws and other local community environmental regulations.

    Salary Placement
    New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.

    Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.8. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.

    Selection Process
    All qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process. The process may consist of one or more of the following selection procedures: Training & Experience Evaluation, Written Exam, Performance Exam, Technical Project and/or Qualifications Appraisal Interview

    Candidates must be successful on all the selection procedures to be placed on the eligibility list.

    The list from this recruitment will also be utilized to fill any vacancies that may occur during the one year life of the Eligibility List.

    Test Retake Policy
    Based on the District's hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Candidates must wait a period of 90 calendar days between testing appointments before retesting. Candidates who are ineligible to participate in an upcoming test or interview due to the provided retake period will be notified via email, and will have their highest valid score(s) on any non-weighted (pass/fail) test parts applied toward that recruitment.

    Examples of Duties
    Develops and monitors the District's recycling program so that it is in compliance with applicable state laws and other local community environmental regulations.

    Collects and records data used for compliance with applicable state laws and other local community environmental regulations.

    Develops and implements programs to increase recycling and to lower the amount of waste going to landfills.

    Monitors and maintains the operation of the Vermitech machine used for recycling purposes.

    Schedules tours of the Vermitech machine.

    Monitors the campus to make sure that easy-to-use recycling containers are conveniently located and are maintained on a regular basis.

    Arranges for the pick-up of all items to be recycled with the chosen recycling company. Works with recycling and waste-hauling vendors to identify appropriate collection sites and pick-up schedules.

    Promotes recycling efforts by providing training sessions for staff on recycling. Conducts orientations for faculty, staff, and students on the use of recycling equipment and the recycling program. Maintains and updates the department website.

    Researches grant opportunities and potential funding for recycling program; develops, prepares, and submits proposals; monitors progress and reports to funding agency.

    Serves as a liaison by attending local environmental meetings.

    Attends educational seminars and workshops to keep current in recycling trends.

    Orders and oversees the maintenance of recycling equipment and provides instructions on their use to faculty, staff and students.

    Prepares and submits State mandated annual report to California Integrated Waste Management Board.

    Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications

    Education Requirement:
    Associate's degree or equivalent.

    Experience Requirement:
    Two (2) years of work experience assisting in the maintenance and compliance of a recycling and solid waste management program. Experience in the development, coordination and/or implementation of a waste reduction, composting or recycling program is desirable.

    Education/Experience Equivalency:
    Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

    Licensure and/or Certification:
    A valid driver's license.
