Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Associate Professor or Full Professor of Mexican American Studies Program in the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The Mexican American Studies Program invites applications for a full-time Associate Professor or Full Professor with a specialization in Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx Studies to begin fall 2023. Preferred areas of specialization include Critical Pedagogies/Education; however, the committee will consider any combination of the following fields: politics, cultural studies, migration, immigration, citizenship, Afro-Latinx Studies, Indigenous Studies, health, labor, comparative Ethnic Studies, activism, gender and sexuality, and U.S-Mexico borderlands. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in their respective area of specialization and will be expected to teach Introduction to Mexican American Studies and other courses (be able to teach in any modality—face to face, online, hybrid); mentor students; sustain a research agenda; seek external funding and contribute service to university, college, department, community, and profession. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of promoting bilingualism biculturalism, and biliteracy in the Texas-Mexico Border through an active research agenda, teaching, and service in the field of Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx Studies.

Program BackgroundHoused in the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement, the Mexican American Studies (MAS) academic program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a social justice-oriented program that prepares students to work, serve and research in their communities to address the complex socio-political/historical conditions surrounding Mexican American/Chicana/o/x/Latina/o/x/ communities. MAS prepares students to be leaders and advocates in their communities and professions to promote a just society. The MAS Program offers a B.A., Minor, Graduate Certificate, and Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentration in Mexican American Studies. The Mexican American Studies program plays a fundamental role in fulfilling the B3 (bilingual, bicultural, biliterate) mission of UTRGV and contributes to the goals of achieving the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement classification. The candidate will be part of a team that is fulfilling that vision and gaining greater regional and national significance. The program is committed to growth and achieving departmental status. The candidate will be coming into a Program that has a strong community of faculty and students committed to the Program's mission.The MAS program seeks a successful candidate with a notable record of research in Chicana/o/x and/or Latina/o/x Studies, quality teaching, and community engagement. The successful candidate would be part of a program that is committed to student success and to scholarly research addressing the strengths and needs of students, and local, state, and national Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx communities as well as cultivating community engagement opportunities for students with a focus on social justice.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D., from an accredited university in Chicana/o/x Studies, Latina/o/x Studies, or closely related field in which the applicant’s expertise is interdisciplinary and falls within the area(s) of Chicana/o/x/Latina/o/x Studies.

Candidates for a tenured appointment must be tenured at their current institution. To be eligible for the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the program candidates must meet the institutional requirements for tenure.
Associate Professor: Requirements include a demonstrated ability to independently conduct programmatic research activities that meet the departmental and institutional requirements for the rank of associate professor; and (2) a high degree of teaching proficiency and commitment to professional service. Professor: Beyond the above requirements, requirements include scholarly professional experience demonstrated through an exemplary record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, external funding, and a distinguished record of accomplishments that have led to a national reputation in the applicant’s area of expertise. Applicant’s professional activities should meet the departmental and institutional requirements for the rank of professor.

• Research and teaching that is grounded in social justice and that demonstrates culturally affirming/responsive approaches

• Teaching experience at the university level and/or willingness to teach in any modality

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
