Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Criminal Justice beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to applicants with substantive research and teaching interests that complement the department's curriculum and may help fill departmental need. The successful candidate will be required to teach a mixture of upper and lower division undergraduate level courses. There are also opportunities to teach in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice Program (traditionally and online). Additionally, scholarly productivity and engagement in service activities are expected. UTRGV is a distributed institution with campuses and offices throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Successful candidates are expected to use technology and alternative delivery methods to maximize our students' success and make education more affordable to students.

Department BackgroundThe Department of Criminal Justice is housed in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The department has approximately 2,000 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students. A Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ) and a Master's of Science in Criminal Justice (traditional and online tracks) are offered by the department. The department currently has 25 full-time faculty.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.) Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2023 is required for appointment. 2) Demonstrable potential for a strong research and publication record for tenure-track appointment. 3) Demonstrable potential for teaching excellence for tenure-track appointment. 4.) Ability to function collegially in a multi-disciplinary and diverse academic department.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
All substantive teaching and research focal areas will be considered, with preference being granted to substantive focal areas that best serve departmental need.

Preferred Qualification:
Experience teaching in a classroom setting and online as well as a demonstrated record of research activity (publications/presentations). Ability to teach Statistics and Research Methods is strongly preferred.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
