The Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Deputy Director of Innovation Services who will work in the Division of Neuro-visual and Vestibular Disorders (NVV) to lead all informatics and data management activities. The NVV Division uses basic research, clinical research, and clinical care practices to generate data to design algorithms, mobile applications, and artificial intelligence tools for diagnosis and treatment of patients with dizziness or other visual or vestibular disorders. The NVV Division employs more than a dozen full-time faculty and staff devoted to clinical and research operations with an operating budget of approximately $2 million per year. The Division’s work is focused on translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications to deliver top quality care at scale. A high level of digital innovation, largely focused around eye movement recordings and their quantitative analysis (essential to diagnosis of dizziness and vertigo) is maintained at all times.

The Deputy Director will be responsible for participating in the planning and execution of all clinical/research informatics and data management activities that support NVV Division work. Activities will vary based on Divisional needs, but will generally include handling informatics infrastructure, technology development, and information technology (IT) support for research and operations. The role requires a high level of independence, creativity, flexibility, and collaboration to meet the diverse needs represented by Divisional research and operations.

Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesInformatics Infrastructure (50%)
  • Data infrastructure design (choice of data services and platforms; buy vs. build decisions; database architecture and federated access, digital workflow architecture for mission needs and compliance, etc.).
  • Setting data policies and ensuring data security and backups.
  • Oversight, budgeting, management, and reporting for “build” projects.
  • Managing system maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades.
  • Maintaining data resources, data use agreements, and user access permissions.
  • Regulatory compliance (Johns Hopkins, Federal, NIH, etc.)

Technology Development (30%)

  • Technology design in partnership with clinical or research faculty.
  • Project management in partnership with clinical or research faculty.
  • Programmer workforce management (including hiring decisions).
  • Engagement around intellectual property and commercialization.

IT Support For Clinical Operations And Research (20%)

  • Computer hardware purchasing and software licensing.
  • Device and equipment management (e.g., portable video-oculography devices).
  • Helping to troubleshoot technical issues that arise for faculty and staff that are not readily addressed by existing IT support infrastructure within the University.
  • Set and oversee all data policies for the NVV Division.
  • Ensure critical data governance controls are in place, validate all system back-ups occur regularly, and manage secure system administration.
  • Utilize best practices for data management and security, as well as for system patching and configuration management.
  • Serve as the lead for all data architecture discussions within Johns Hopkins and with its affiliates regarding best practices for ensuring life cycle data integrity for all Divisional projects.
  • Ensure entities within and outside Johns Hopkins can efficiently access data as required.
  • Business practices and institutional alignment.
  • Align all data capture, inquiry, and use with the NVV and Johns Hopkins business rules.
  • Determine and implement meaningful database and digital tools design based on the aims of the clinical operations and research groups.
  • Implement programs in alignment with Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical Research (ICTR) strategic initiatives.
  • Engage with institutional clinical (e.g., Epic, Office of Telemedicine, Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality) and research (e.g., Precision Medicine Analytics Platform, OHDSI) informatics teams to ensure compatibility and interoperability of digital workflows.
  • Represent NVV in discussions with the Center for Clinical Data Analysis (CCDA), Data Trust, and Internal Review Board (IRB).
  • Work directly with faculty, staff, and consultants to accomplish these tasks.
  • Participate in groups not limited to the Data Manager’s Interest Group.
  • Data science and research.
  • Write queries for data validation, cleaning, and quality assurance.
  • Provide input to grant proposals, project reports, and manuscripts for publication.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with data analysts, programmers, engineers, researchers, and clinicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an institutional enterprise-level team of data managers.
  • Experience working in an academic environment on both clinical and research projects.
  • Experience managing compliance with institutional policies and external regulatory environments.
  • Experience with Tableau and SQL.
  • Knowledge of Bayesian methods, machine learning, and statistical science.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five (5) years of IT experience, with some Project Management experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Hands-on experience using either Epic or Cerner data warehouses.
  • Obtain CCDA Adjunct Team credentials within 24 months from hire (NVV will fund).


Preferred Qualifications
  • CCDA Adjunct Team membership.
  • Ten (10) years of experience managing real-world clinical data sets.
  • Experience transforming data into standard data models such as OMOP or PCORnet.
  • Experience with informatics project management and budgeting for hardware/software expenses.
  • Experience with BOTH Epic and Cerner data warehouses.

Starting Salary Range: $96,950 - $133,350 (Commensurate with experience)
