The Office of the Provost is seeking an experienced educator to build and lead a new center for inclusive pedagogy in the arts as part of a comprehensive approach to faculty development at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). This is an exciting opportunity to lead and expand existing faculty development programs and develop a new center dedicated to adapting CalArts’ legacy of radical pedagogy to a 21st century context that reflects CalArts’ process-focused approach steeped in experimentation and creative freedom and committed to the values of equity, inclusion, diversity and access. Equity-minded, anti-racist, culturally responsive and inclusive approaches will undergird the framework for this new center. As faculty director of the center, this role will engage a faculty that are working artists and scholars to develop and implement a vision for inclusive teaching, mentoring, and learning at CalArts as the Institute celebrates its fifty years and looks ahead to shape its future.

REQUIREMENTS: 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and collaborate with key institutional stakeholders to identify and promote best practices surrounding equity-minded and inclusive teaching and the assessment of teaching.
  • Support a multidisciplinary faculty from a broad range of practices to create an equitable learning environment.
  • Partner with the institute’s IDEA initiative to develop resources, training and support around antiracist and inclusive teaching practices and develop cultural competence in the classroom.
  • Oversee and implement newly funded Faculty Learning Community initiative.
  • Create and lead efforts to enhance faculty and student success through improvements in CalArts’ teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Develop and implement an Institute-wide comprehensive vision for evidence-based programming that supports development of inclusive pedagogy and teaching effectiveness for faculty and teaching assistants.
  • Create, plan, deliver, and assess faculty development programs and faculty development services.
  • Present, create programming, and disseminate information on best practices in teaching and learning to a wide variety of audiences including faculty, program directors, assistant/associate deans, deans, and the faculty at large.
  • Partner with the Academic Council and other faculty leadership on programming and strategic planning for the center.
  • Collaborate closely with the senior academic leaders in the Provost’s Office, CalArts schools and the Library, Institute Diversity Office (IDO), Extended Studies, and other key stakeholders to identify and develop key initiatives and seamless faculty support interfaces that promote inclusive teaching and learning outcomes and contribute to faculty and student success
  • Partner with IDO, Student Experience (specifically Health and Wellness) and Community Rights and Responsibility to support faculty in meeting the needs of a diverse set of students.
  • Partner with instructional technology staff to support faculty with the learning management system and other academic and registrarial technologies.
  • Teach 1-2 classes per year in area of expertise.
  • Partner with Advancement to secure and manage grants and gifts to support the center’s programming.
  • Promote the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Provide strategic direction for the center’s web page and communication campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of current research and theories on anti-racism, diversity and inclusion, and equity-mindedness, particularly in higher-education settings
  • Demonstrated excellence in instructional practice at the higher education level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equitable and inclusive practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience developing and managing educational and professional development programs.
  • Knowledge of best practices in learning support services.

Though not required, the following characteristics are also helpful for this position:

  • Knowledge of current research, trends and thinking in higher education teaching and learning in arts education
  • Prior experience with program assessment and evaluation
  • Expertise in various forms of educational technology
  • Contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning or other forms of educational research

CalArts has a multidisciplinary approach to its studies of the arts through six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater.
