Senior Windows Systems Administrator

About the role

We're looking for a Windows Systems Administrator to help us operate, maintain, and evolve several business critical applications that support employees across the SEI. You will help us scale and improve our infrastructure by ensuring our applications are secure, reliable, and kept up-to-date and work closely with our product teams and developers to automate software deployment from inception to deployment and operations.

What you'll do
  • Provide thought leadership and influence the direction of Windows and Azure-based technologies.

  • Oversee configuration management for a fleet of Windows endpoints and servers in a hybrid environment to ensure they are secure, reliable, and kept up-to-date.

  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and fix issues in production related to operations, applications, and infrastructure.

  • Work with developers, infrastructure engineers, and IT professionals to support our research mission.

Who you are
  • Are knowledgeable about Windows operating systems and Azure-based services.

  • Experienced working with a range of enterprise applications and instrumenting them in a way ensures they are reliable, secure, and maintainable.

  • Are comfortable writing scripts and leveraging tooling that improves automation.

  • Are keen to experiment, challenge norms and deliver secure, reliable, and performant systems that delight users.

  • Enjoy automating and innovating rather than performing repetitive tasks.

  • Do not need to be a Microsoft 365 or macOS expert, but it's a bonus if you are!

Who we are

The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Its core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect-free, within budget and on time, every time.

The Windows Team builds, operates, and improves our Microsoft-based services which are used by engineers, researchers, developers, and operational staff across the SEI. We handle everything from Active Directory and Group Policy to Microsoft Information Protection, Intune, and Conditional Access. If it happens using Microsoft technology we’re involved.

Requirements:
  • BS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of training and experience; or a degree in other technical fields (e.g., engineering) and years of relevant experience as described above will be considered as well.

  • Ability to periodically provide technical support on a 24x7 basis is required, including weekends and an on-call rotation.

  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This may include national travel to SEI sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion.

  • Experience as a Windows Administrator for a heterogeneous infrastructure in a professional environment.

  • You will have at least 2 years relevant experience maintaining and evolving a Windows environment for the same organization.

  • You will be subject to a background check and will need to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
