The University of Houston College of Optometry is seeking an outstanding clinician scientist to join the Clinical Sciences Department. This is an open-rank, tenure-track faculty search for a promising assistant, associate, or full professor. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a nationally recognized, independent, externally funded clinical research program. The successful candidate should have research interests and expertise that may include, but are not limited to, the following translational program priorities:
  • Applied data sciences and clinical informatics
  • Telehealth applications and remote care delivery
  • Evidence-based clinical practice, clinical outcomes, and comparative efficacy research
  • Anterior segment research including dry eye, ocular surface disease, and contact lenses
  • Treatment and prevention of refractive errors
  • Clinical impact of educational, social, and behavioral health interventions
  • Visual performance in sports and other occupationally demanding visual environments (virtual reality, drone pilots, eSports, etc.)
  • Ocular and systemic diseases affecting the posterior segment of the eye.
The successful candidate will teach in the College’s optometry professional program and graduate program in physiological optics. The applicant will join a diverse group of vision researchers studying normal and abnormal visual processes, using a variety of approaches ranging from molecular and cellular, to behavioral and optical. The research program is supported by a P30 core grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI), which provides technical support for instrumentation and optical design, programming and application development, biostatistics, histology, and biomedical imaging capabilities. A T35 training grant also supports research training for professional students. A diverse patient base provides opportunities for patient-based or translational investigations. Existing biomedical research strengths within the College, University and the neighboring Texas Medical Center provide a unique environment for collaboration.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D., or relevant terminal clinical or public health degree (e.g. O.D., M.D., MPH), and a record of high productivity at their current rank. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and the startup package will be competitive.
