Under the direction of the Office of HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) and Regional Affairs, the SDSU HSI Progresando en Salud goals are to:
  • Enroll 200 Latinx adult learners seeking careers in healthcare into the HSI Progresando en Salud program in two years.
  • Create community, identity, and sense of belonging for participants through a cohort model.
  • Remove financial, systemic, and institutional barriers to and facilitate successful pathways to health care careers through various entry points (undergraduate programs, graduate programs, post baccalaureate programs degree completion, certificate programs (SDSU Global Campus), and non-traditional undergraduate degree programs (SDSU microsites) for adult learners that honor the different available paths to health careers for traditional and non-traditional Hispanic/Latinx.
  • Produce well-informed participants about the breadth of health careers available to them. Participants should leave the program more informed about healthcare careers than upon entry.
  • Connect all participants with SDSU student mentors, faculty mentors, and professional mentors to facilitate retention, knowledge, navigation and connection.
  • Provide paid opportunities for participants to engage in unpaid or underpaid extracurricular career crucial experiences (such as clinical shadowing of health career professionals, clinical volunteer experience, internships, practicum, or clinical placements) without the need to sacrifice their ability to earn income and support themselves.


Responsibilities
Major Job Responsibilities:

The SDSU HSI Progresando en Salud Program Coordinator & Retention Specialist will coordinate programming, recruitment of program participants, paid rotation internships, mentoring matching and management and in collaboration with the College of Sciences Student Success Center, College of Health and Human Services Advising, and the Health Professional Advising Office will be responsible for facilitating academic advising, academic coaching, student success and retention efforts for all participants. This individual will also help support students by coordinating career counseling services (internship searching, career fairs, career exploration, resume writing, mock interviews etc).

Specific Duties

Under the general supervision of the Office of HSI and Regional Affairs, this position is responsible for but not limited to:

Responsibility

Program Management (70%)
  • Manage and assist in the recruitment, screening, eligibility and denial/acceptance of program participants into HSI Progresando en Salud Program.
  • Recruit 200 program participants over the course of two years
  • Plan and coordinate programming and related activities supporting the goals of the program
  • Coordinate placement and evaluation of students in paid placements (research, medical rotation, health care internships or pre-med shadowing)
  • Collaborate with the College of Sciences Student Success Center, College of Health and Human Services, and the Health Professional Advising Office for mentoring matching and management to be responsible for the academic advising, academic coaching, student success and retention efforts for all participants
  • Coordinate career counseling services (internship searching, career fairs, career exploration, resume writing, mock interviews, etc.)
  • Manage program budget. Student research stipends, and miscellaneous expenses along with payments to guest speakers, workshop facilitators, seminar presenters, and/or honorariums
  • Collect, measure and analyze data to measure program outcomes


Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned 30%
  • Maintain working relationships with students, campus, off campus partners to ensure the success of the program.
  • Identify internship, academic year/summer research and graduate school opportunities
  • Oversee website to reflect the most up-to-date information
  • Manage program and attend meetings in absence of program directors
  • Develop and disseminate program marketing materials to promote and recruit


Qualifications
Required Knowledge and Abilities

• Ability to interact effectively with collaborators, co-workers, clients and program participants
• Ability to understand and follow work rules and procedures
• Ability to display motivation and strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to display organization, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, possess good judgment and common sense
• Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity

Required Experience and Education

• Must have a bachelor's level background in engineering, physical, biological, or behavioral science, or higher education, student affairs, public administration, student services.
• A minimum of 6 years’ experience in administering student training programs and have demonstrated management skills, knowledge, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

• A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, public administration, student services, or a STEM discipline.
