Position Purpose

The Electronics/Access Control Technician A will be proficient in maintaining the Dartmouth’s significant clocks and centralized clock systems, public address systems used for events/athletic contests, scoreboards, and audio-visual equipment (portable and fixed equipment). The position will also maintain other equipment associated with the Access Control Shop such as camera systems, card readers, access control panels, key/core systems, intrusion systems and associated door hardware/locks. The position will assist with other electronic equipment repairs and installations on campus.

Associates plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Technical school graduate and hold a relevant Associate’s degree or have equivalent education and experience.
  • Five years of relevant experience of which two must have been served as an apprentice or equivalent position.
  • Proficiency in all aspects of networked/automated electronic systems including knowledge of processor-based communication and alarm systems and software.
  • Working knowledge of and demonstrated skills in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of security systems (key, combination, electronic).
  • Valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expert level skills and knowledge related to both system and component functionality.
  • Ability to perform math computations as related to trade and ability to read blue prints and schematics.
  • Expert level skill in the use of hand and power tools, analog/digital test equipment, man lifts, testing devices and ladders.
  • Possess advanced computer skills related to troubleshooting and programming access control systems.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment and have excellent problem solving skills.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.

Description

Testing/Maintenance/Repair & Installation:

Uses a high degree of independence, demonstrated and proficient knowledge to perform regular testing, maintenance, repair, and installation of electronic systems including assessment and troubleshooting of components and systems. Examples of systems include:
  • Clock systems
  • Public address system Audio/visual systems
  • Scoreboard systems
  • Camera systems (non-security related)

Description

Access Control Systems/Alarm Intrusion Systems:
  • Performs regular testing and maintenance of access control and alarm intrusion systems including assessment and troubleshooting of components and systems.
  • Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of access control and security systems to diagnose cause of malfunction. Tests electronic and mechanical components and performs system testing and analysis in order to locate defects.
  • Performs systems programming and integration of access controls and security systems with burglar alarm, fire alarm and camera systems.
  • Maintains records of system installations, repairs, calibrations, and tests.
  • Coordinates installation with the Department of Safety & Security ( DOSS ), departments, and various maintenance and operations trades personnel. Maintains effective working relationships with constituents.

Access Control Shop Functions:

Assists in other functions of the Access Control Shop as needed, such as:
  • Installs new or modify existing door hardware, including locks, as needed.
  • Cuts and issues new keys to authorized personnel.
  • Rekeys locks for security purposes; changes locker combinations.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of all keys, locks, and other security devices, including Master Key systems.

Description

General Responsibilities:
  • Follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints on equipment and systems to assist in the troubleshooting, installation, maintenance and repair process of electronic equipment.
  • Performs systems programming and integration of software with the electronic piece of equipment where applicable
  • Recommends procurement of repair, new or replacement equipment, accessories, tools, and supplies
  • Provides technical training and shares information to FO&M staff to enable them to conduct maintenance, troubleshoot problems, and learn new systems. For example, on systems where FO&M provides event coverage.
  • Works with outside contractors as needed to facilitate repairs and maintenance pertaining to electronic equipment and assigned tasks.
  • Provides electronic system coverage at many various events on campus including supporting events, conferences, annual ceremonies, etc. Must be willing to work a significant amount of overtime.
  • Reviews drawings and plans, and provides comments.
  • Maintains records of system installations, repairs, calibrations, and tests, using databases, spreadsheets, word documents and drawings.
  • Successfully complete and remain certified and compliant in all safety or trades related course work as may be required by the College.
