VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY AND

DEAN OF THE GRADUATE COLLEGE

Ohio University (OHIO) invites expressions of interest and nominations for the position of Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and Dean of the Graduate College (VPRCA/Dean). The position reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost (EVPP).

Chartered in 1804, Ohio University is the state's first institution of higher education and one of America's oldest public universities. The main campus of Ohio University is based in Athens, Ohio, with five regional campuses, additional satellite locations, and extensive competitive online programs. OHIO has 13 colleges and offers a total of 249 undergraduate majors, and over 130 master’s and 35 Ph.D. programs. The university has an enrollment of more than 27,600 students. The city of Athens has a population of 25,000 and is in southeastern Ohio along the Hocking River with abundant outdoor recreation opportunities nearby and a culturally rich college town atmosphere.  

As of 2022, OHIO was designated an R1 Classification according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. OHIO has funding in the form of research grants and contracts between $50-60M, including awards from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education, and more. The university is recognized internationally for research and scholarship in areas including avionics, biotechnology, diabetes, infectious disease, aging, communication, environmental studies, history, pipeline corrosion, physics, and psychology; and boasts world-class fine arts programs that include ceramics, film, and printmaking. OHIO ranks first among Ohio institutions of higher education for cumulative research licensing revenue, with faculty inventions generating more than $100 million during the last ten years.

The next VPRCA/Dean will join the OHIO community as it builds on its current research momentum and enhances its graduate mission. The VPRCA/Dean reports to the EVPP and has the opportunity to develop and articulate a strategic vision for the research and graduate operation at OHIO. This individual will provide oversight of the university's research support services, operations and administration, research compliance, economic development, and entrepreneurial and innovation programs while fostering a strong interdisciplinary focus across the university. The VPRCA/Dean will oversee a team of more than 60 individuals who comprise the administrative staff of the Graduate College and the research enterprise. In addition, the VPRCA/Dean will work collaboratively with graduate faculty throughout OHIO’s colleges and schools. In addition, the VPRCA/Dean will oversee a budget of $9.5M. The ideal candidate will hold an earned doctorate in one of OHIO's general fields of study and have achieved a distinguished record of scholarly, professional, and creative achievement sufficient for appointment as a full professor in one of the programs within the university. In addition, the individual must possess significant administrative experience.
