Job Summary
Reporting to the campus Director of Counseling, the Veterans Counselor is responsible for counseling and providing individual and group educational and vocational guidance services to military veteran students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Performance Requirements*
- Provides short-term personal counseling to veteran students in accordance with best practices and the mission of Tarrant County College
- Provides crisis counseling for students referred by Campus Care Teams, faculty, staff, and students
- Counsels students toward understanding and overcoming social, emotional, and developmental issues
- Develops and presents veteran student wellness and/or student success seminars
- Refers students to local, State, and Federal Veterans Affairs (VA) agencies and resources as needed
- Engages in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques associated with counseling veteran students
- Assists with the academic advising process for veteran students
- Visits area VA agencies and other community organizations to conduct seminars and presentations, or disperse college information as necessary
- Communicates, collaborates, and provides consultation with faculty to increase veteran student success
- Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics, for vocational and educational planning
- Compiles and studies occupational, educational, and economic information to aid counselees in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives
- Participates on behalf of the College in external community organizations and associations as assigned to support the essential performance requirements
- Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
- Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College ( TCC )
- Supports the values of the College: diversity, teaching excellence, student success, innovation, and creativity and service to the College
- Supports the mission, values and 3 goals and 8 principles of the College
Works under the general supervision of the campus Director of Counseling
*Performs Other Related Tasks as Required

Required Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree counseling, psychology, social work, or related field
- Three (3) years’ working experience providing counseling
- One (1) year’s working experience providing counseling to veterans
- Currently a Licensed Professional Counselor ( LPC ), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( LMFT ), a Licensed Clinical Psychologist ( LCP ), a National Certified Counselor ( NCC ), or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker ( LCSW )
- Must hold an unrestricted mental health license in Texas, or obtain within one (1) year from hire date; extensions may be requested and will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Veterans counseling experience in higher education
- Active membership in the Military and Government Counseling Association (a division of ACA )
- Counseling certifications related to counseling veterans / veteran students and their families
- Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with diverse populations
- Skilled using applications and enterprise systems, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and a setting that is diverse and urban
- Ability to think critically to effectively solve and communicate problems in a fast-paced environment where the demands for work are varied, and unpredictable in scope and volume
- Ability to analyze data and provide sound recommendations based on policy, procedure, practice, and existing regulations
- Ability to delegate work appropriately to faculty and staff to meet College and campus deliverables
