The Department of Applied Linguistics/ESL is happy to announce a non-tenure-track position for an Academic Professional position in the Intensive English Program in the Department of Applied Linguistics, starting in Fall 2022.

GSU, an enterprising R-1 institution in downtown Atlanta, is a national leader in using innovation to drive student success and research growth. The Department of Applied Linguistics/ESL at Georgia State University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position (Academic Professional) in the Intensive English Program (IEP) in the Department of Applied Linguistics to begin November 1, 2022. The IEP has been serving international students for over twenty years with a content-based award-winning curriculum that emphasizes student-centered learning. The Academic Professional will report directly to the IEP Director and work closely on IEP student and faculty issues, along with current and new special programs, including community-based programs.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for IEP student services, faculty engagement, grant-writing, special program management, and IEP instruction. As an Academic Professional, the position involves 20% teaching and 80% administrative/service.

Essential qualifications for the position include:

· A Terminal degree in applied linguistics or TESOL (master’s degree) or a related field

· Experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes in an IEP at the university level

· Evidence of successful teaching in online, hybrid, and in-person modalities in ESL, along with a willingness to explore innovative ways to engage students in all modalities

· Interest and experience in managing special programs

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

· Experience developing and modifying curricula to best suit the needs of specific student groups and levels

· Experience with successfully planning and coordinating short-term programs in English

· Active professional engagement within the field of Applied Linguistics and TESOL

· A track record of collaboration with colleagues within a program and across programs/units

· Experience working on special projects locally (Atlanta community programs) or internationally (government-sponsored and university-to-university programs)

· Interest in participating actively in the building of new programs, such as English for Occupational Purposes and ESP programs in academic and non-academic areas.

· Overseas experience in EFL or related areas

· Bilingual (English plus a second language)

Work modality and schedule

The Academic Professional reports in person to one of the IEP offices Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required.

The IEP at Georgia State University is known as an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Course content, activities and assignments are designed to prepare students for the language demands of university work. Students placed at the intermediate to advanced levels will read, discuss and write about topics from academic courses. At the beginning and low-intermediate levels, students focus primarily on basic language skills.
