Position Summary
The Department of Environment and Sustainability at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, seeks to hire two (2) tenure-track professors, rank open (Assistant, Associate or Full) to begin in the 2023-2024 academic year. With appropriate experience, a future role in department leadership is possible.
Our faculty undertake not only R1, top-tier, foundational research, but also are committed to the goal of problem-solving for a sustainable future, a task that requires inter-, multi- or transdisciplinary environmental research. The department is therefore broadly based, with faculty expertise in the ecological and environmental sciences, social sciences and humanities.
Our pedagogical mission is to guide the academic careers of students trained to consider both natural and social science aspects of environmental problems, and effectively communicate their findings to the world. We seek faculty colleagues who will actively model this outcome. We offer three Bachelor’s degrees (Environmental Sustainability; Environmental Sciences; Environmental Studies), three Master’s degrees (Sustainability; Sustainability Leadership; Evolution, Ecology and Behavior) and two PhD tracks (Sustainability; Evolution, Ecology and Behavior).
We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinarity, with training and research in Sustainability Science or Sustainability Social Science. We welcome unconventional approaches to critical issues: topics of interest include but are not limited to issues pertaining to urban ecology, agri-food systems, water systems, energy and climate. A range of quantitative and qualitative approaches with scales from local to global are all appreciated. Our location in Western New York is ideally positioned for the study of processes that impact rural, suburban and urban environments, all in the context of two of the Great Lakes.
Standard duties for academic-year (10-month) faculty include:
Located on territory of the Seneca Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, we are committed to providing an inclusive, accessible, and safe environment where everyone can learn and thrive. We seek to ensure that our activities respect the needs and identities of all students, staff, faculty and community partners, with special attention to those historically underrepresented in our field.
