Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Veterans Services, led by the Associate Director of Veterans Services, the incumbent will provide comprehensive advising that is equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive, and that enhances the quality of campus life and supports the academic success of student veterans, servicemembers, and eligible dependents. The incumbent will also serve as School Certifying Official for certification of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) and California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) education and vocational rehabilitation benefits for eligible students. Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as advisor to prospective and current CSULB student veterans, service members, and dependents.
  • Monitor the academic progress of all CSULB veterans, service members, and dependents.
  • Perform certification of USDVA and CDVA education and Vocational Rehabilitation benefits.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Fully functional knowledge of standard office procedures and practices. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Experience using CMS database to retrieve student contact and academic information. Experience using VA Once to enter and retrieve student veteran education benefits information. Understanding of CSULB academic requirements, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of U.S. and California Departments of Veterans Affairs educational benefits. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge in a multi-cultural University setting. Ability to speak in public. Experience giving presentations. Ability to exercise sound time management skills and control of projects and work proactively to mitigate delays, budget problems and any additional complication that my jeopardize operations of unit. Outstanding communication skills both written and orally to communicate using grammatically correct English effectively on a one-to-one basis, over the telephone, or in a group setting to obtain information; explain policies, procedures, etc. to all levels of management, students, and employees from multiple cultures, genders, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds. Excellent oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with coworkers, staff, and various constituents. Ability to manage, organize and demonstrate command of complex and continuously changing array of information, dates, places, and people in a systematic way in order to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort in the process of completing projects. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations procedures etc. to define the problem, identify the relevant issues, and generate reasonable and appropriate alternatives or solutions. Proficiency in using PC computers utilizing programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, etc.). Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and communicate clearly and effectively with students, peers, administrators, campus and University personnel, clients, state officials, vendors, professionals, management, etc. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Demonstrated experience problem-solving across university departments and with external governing bodies. Demonstrated experience handling sensitive matters involving groups or individuals with tact and discretion. Demonstrated experience problem-solving across university departments and with external governing bodies. Experience with on-site monitoring of complex student programs with large attendance. Ability to plan, manage, and prioritize simultaneous complex projects. Ability to work weekends and a flexible work time as needed and determined by operational needs. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Ability to lift ~25lbs. to carry documents from office, Campus, to program sites. Ability to work occasional weekends and or evenings. Possession of a valid Driver's License to operate University vehicle.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required. Experience working with military veterans and service members strongly desired.

Possession of a valid Driver's License to operate University vehicles.

Compensation

The salary range for this classification is $4,304 to $6,120 per month.

Time Base

Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
