Job Description

ITEP's Tribes and Climate Change Program (TCCP) was established in 2009 and works with federally recognized Tribes throughout the U.S. The program provides support and resources for Tribes as they prepare for and contend with climate change impacts and transition to clean energy sources. The Research Associate will lead the TCCP's writing and publication efforts and collaborate with TCCP staff on job functions that include national and regional conferences, trainings and workshops, website development and other responsibilities as assigned.

Writing & Publication - 75%
  • Lead for development & publication of the biennial Status of Tribes & Climate Change (STACC).
  • Report, oversee development & creation of 4 case studies per year on climate adaptation & mitigation efforts.
  • Participate in national & regional working groups to write and analyze data for reports.

Support & Co-organize Events - 10%
  • Co-organizes and supports in-person, hybrid, virtual outreach events hosted by ITEP or external partners including national climate conference hosted by ITEP's climate program, research & develop carbon neutrality plans for events, travels in-state and out of state for conferences as needed.

Curriculum Development - 5%
  • Research & develop & revise training curriculum, develop carbon neutrality plans for courses, literature reviews, and travel for in-state & out of state workshops as needed.

Program Website Development - 5%
  • Research & develop content for new climate change fact sheets, research and revise outdated fact sheets as needed, and identify, research and develop additional website content.

Other - 5%
  • Provides technical assistance to Tribes, attends ITEP staff and climate program meetings & provide updates as needed, promote NAU & ITEP's mission & purpose, direct work of student workers as needed, provide supervision of staff as needed and other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position will be required to work with program staff on trainings, meetings and conferences whether they are in-person, hybrid or virtual. This position will be required to travel to in-state, in-town or out of state events and may require the occasional field trip or outdoor field work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in relevant discipline (e.g. climate change science, environmental science).
  • Four to six years experience of research support experience including researching, writing, and producing reports and other publications.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Two to four years' experience working with Tribal and Indigenous communities.
  • Four to six years experience of working on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience working with and/or understanding of climate change issues facing diverse Tribal and Indigenous communities including Indigenous and Tribal Knowledges (I/TKs).
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to promote a spirit of cooperation and teamwork under demanding circumstances, which may include meeting workshop deadlines, highly variable workload activities, working with staff from multiple org.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Skill in oral & written communication & presentation, coordinating activities.
  • Skill in using PC, Macs, Adobe suite & Stock, virtual meeting platforms, data cloud storage.
  • Skill in supervision, organization & training.
  • Knowledge of budgets and grant proposals.


Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $54,779 - $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
