Department Summary
The Vivian Olum Child Development Center offers a comprehensive program providing education and care for infants through elementary school-aged children. The center's mission is to serve the needs of university employees' families by providing a foundation of experiences that foster growth and development of children and a safe and nurturing environment for children and families. The center consists of seven classrooms which collectively serve over 100 children each day.

The Vivian Olum Child Development Center is a unit within Campus Services in the Finance and Administration portfolio. Finance and Administration is a vibrant and varied portfolio serving all aspects of campus life. Our employees perform a wide range of functions including offering essential financial tools and support to the university's many departments, providing key resources to employees, and keeping campus safe, clean, accessible and beautiful.
Position Summary
The Director for Vivian Olum Child Development Center provides strategic vision for the center and oversight for center-wide daily operations, as well as facility and fiscal management. The Director provides oversight and direction for the development of the annual budget exceeding $1,900,000. The Director also provides oversight for the recruitment, scheduling, training and supervision of approximately 24 classified teaching staff and 50+ UO student employees center-wide. The Director holds primary supervisory responsibility for the Upper School Assistant Director, Lower School Assistant Director, Enrollment and Operations Coordinator, and Vivian Olum's Receptionist.

Interactions with a variety of individuals will occur regularly during the course of performing work to cultivate and maintain strong professional relationships with the campus community and Vivian Olum staff. The Director works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently to ensure that the center's programs and facilities meet all applicable licensing requirements, which includes inspections, building repair and staff training documentation, as well as all university standards and requirements. Decisions may be made about the best methods and materials necessary for the daily operations of the facility. They may also include setting priorities, assessing the centers needs and responding to those needs.

The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Campus Services, a performance evaluation is conducted annually. This position may be subject to a criminal records check and possible finger printing.
Minimum Requirements
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Be director qualified according to the Oregon Child Care Division.
  • Have five years of progressively responsible work experience in the childcare field, including three years' program management which includes fiscal management, facility management, and supervision of adults.
  • Meet Step 10 in the Central Background Registry of the Oregon Department of Education's Early Learning Division Office of Child Care. Appointment to the director position is contingent upon successful enrollment.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of demonstrated success in leading teams and supervising others.
  • Three years of training or experience with child-centered approaches to early childhood education, such as RIE, Reggio Emilia, or Constructivist.
  • Two years managing a childcare center.
  • Professional experience in a higher education setting.
  • Master's degree in early childhood education or a related field.
