SSM Health and Saint Louis University School of Medicine in Saint Louis, Missouri seek a physician leader to serve as the inaugural Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs. This is a newly created role, developed to promote strategic and operational excellence and ensure new levels of patient care, operational efficiency, and value in the context of the integration of SLUCare, the School of Medicine’s faculty practice group, into SSM Health.

As of July 1, 2022, SLUCare Physician Group became part of the SSM Health system, with the goal of affording patients improved and seamless access to all levels of care, including highly specialized procedures and clinical trials. The integration is an investment in the Saint Louis University School of Medicine to expand clinical research, medical training, and education across the region.

The Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs (VDCA) joins the leadership teams of both SLU’s School of Medicine and SSM Health and reports to executives in both organizations: the Regional Chief Clinical Officer of SSM Health Medical Group, St. Louis with regard to clinical affairs, and the Dean of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine (SLU SOM) with regard to academic affairs.

Key Responsibilities

The Vice Dean will focus on care quality, patient satisfaction, provider and staff satisfaction, growth, and financial performance while fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive professional and care-delivery environment. They will work closely with SLU clinical chairs to support department strategy, collaborate with SLU SOM & SSM Health to ensure efficient and effective research activities, and ensure the clinical care delivery practices aligns with the organizational mission.

They will work to ensure SLUCare clinical staff are well engaged, with attention to provider wellness and input in developing a robust provider recruitment and retention plan. In collaboration with physician leaders – including the hospital CMOs – the Vice Dean will ensure that patients are cared for in a seamless manner and that providers are driving clinical activities that are needed for successful performance on risk-based contracts such as value-based care and bundled payments.

The Vice Dean will be expected to sustain a part-time clinical practice to maintain clinical skills and develop an in-depth understanding of SSM Health’s mission and milieu.

The successful candidate will be a strategic leader and respected clinician with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire, manage, mentor, and develop a culturally diverse faculty and staff.
