Assistant Professor Working Title Assistant Professor– Clinical Psychology - #001580 Department Psychology Position Summary

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The Psychology Department at Western Carolina University (WCU) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant professor level, with a projected begin work date of either January 2023 or August 2023.

The typical teaching load in the department is a 3-3 (Fall/Spring), with a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses. Specifically, the successful candidate will show evidence of or potential for success in teaching undergraduate courses such as general psychology, abnormal psychology, and/or child psychopathology. In addition to undergraduate teaching, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision of students in our APA accredited post-masters Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Health Service Psychology (Combined Clinical- School) program and our scientist-practitioner oriented MA program in clinical psychology. These graduate programs are focused on training students in the delivery of assessments and interventions that are grounded in behavioral/cognitive-behavioral theory.

As such, the successful candidate would demonstrate the ability to teach graduate courses in, for example, assessment, advanced psychopathology, supervision, ethics, and/or psychotherapy, and to supervise clinic cases, thesis projects, and dissertations.

Relevant to this tenure-track faculty position is our department’s state-of-the art, public-facing McKee Assessment and Psychological Services Clinic, dedicated to providing advanced assessment training for our graduate students (PsyD, SSP, MA) through affordable comprehensive services to individuals, families, and schools in our community. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to support the supervision of graduate students in the McKee Clinic, and work closely with the Clinic Director, Program Coordinators, and other faculty to support this important departmental function. To this end, the eligible candidate needs to have earned a doctorate (PhD or PsyD) in clinical psychology (or closely related field) from an APA-accredited program and be licensed (or license-eligible) as a psychologist in North Carolina. As a teacher scholar, the successful faculty member is expected to maintain a program of meaningful disciplinary research that is engaging to both undergraduate and graduate students. The department has a dedicated space for cognitive neuroscience (i.e., “the BRAIN lab”) with EEG equipment, and existing research partnerships with schools-, hospitals-, non-profit organizations, and other service providers in the region. The area of research specialization or interest is open.
