Syracuse University, a private, student-focused, and globally engaged R1 university, invites inquiries, applications, and nominations for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Located in the geographic heart of New York State, Syracuse University offers world-class programs across the natural and social sciences; liberal, visual, and performing arts; and professional studies through its 13 schools and colleges; numerous centers, programs, and institutes that facilitate cross-disciplinary activity; 200 majors and 100 minors; and online degrees and certificates. The College of Arts and Sciences is the first and largest of the university’s schools and colleges and is central to Syracuse’s mission. The college encompasses the natural sciences and mathematics, the humanities, and the social sciences, with the lattermost degrees offered at the undergraduate level in partnership with the renowned Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

The College of Arts and Sciences, with its 50+ majors and 360 faculty members, forms the intellectual core for the liberal arts and sciences at Syracuse University. As the chief academic and administrative leader of the college, the dean is expected to provide the collaborative leadership and vision that define the direction of the college, advance its excellence and impact in scholarship and interdisciplinary opportunities, and foster vibrant undergraduate and graduate educational programs and opportunities. Given the central role the college plays in the liberal arts and sciences education for all Syracuse undergraduates, the dean is expected to be an innovative and collaborative leader in curriculum discussions within the college and university. The next dean will be a skilled collaborator with the deans of the other schools and colleges, as well as with the vice chancellor, provost and chief academic officer, to whom the dean reports.

The new dean should be a strategic, inspiring, and visionary leader with administrative experience appropriate in scope to show evidence of an ability to elevate academic distinctiveness and excellence, foster improvements and innovations, and unify and build the college’s capacity and core identity. The successful candidate will possess a vitae with experience and accomplishments in all aspects of faculty life; demonstrated success in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives; a record of achievement in collaborative leadership and institutional change; and administrative experience within a complex environment. An earned terminal degree and the scholarly credentials to be appointed at the level of full professor with tenure in one of the college’s disciplines or interdisciplinary fields are required.
