About the Department/Unit

The Office of Vice President, Finance and Treasurer is headed by Brontè Burleigh-Jones, CFO, Vice President & Treasurer. The office oversees administrative functions that support American University's academic mission to educate and inform. Our office includes Finance, Budget and Payroll, Facilities and Administrative Services, and Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety. The office oversees the university endowment, facilities design and construction (including the proposed campus enhancements for the coming decade), as well as important university-wide initiatives such as emergency preparedness and sustainability.

The Assistant Vice President for Compliance, Safety and Enterprise Risk Management is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and guidance for the development and implementation of organizational objectives for all functional areas and programs related to compliance and enterprise risk management. The AVP for Compliance, Safety and Enterprise Risk Management promotes the development and maintenance of a broad, enterprise-wide view of compliance and risk; viewing risk as both hazards and opportunities; aligning compliance and risk response with resources and strategic objectives; and integrating compliance and risk management into university-wide planning, resource allocation, and operations.

Activities managed by this role include environmental health and safety, emergency preparedness planning and implementation, continuity of operations planning and implementation, administration of the University's insurance program, fire safety, advising on and monitoring of international travel safety, and overseeing the university’s compliance and risk exposures. The AVP also serves on the Threat Assessment and Management Team, co-chairs the Enterprise Risk Management Team, and ensures university-wide policy development and compliance with federal and local statutory and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions
  1. Provide effective leadership, as well as stewardship, to the department by being actively involved in all programs and services. Responsible for department-related policy development and implementation; fire safety assessment and program development and implementation; administration of the University insurance program; environmental health and safety program development and implementation; University risk management policy development, global program safety oversight, management of a comprehensive insurance portfolio; and overall threat assessment activities.
  2. Work with all members of the community and provide support as needed in analyzing and addressing the University’s risk exposures and limiting losses to its human, financial, and physical assets. Oversee the compliance, environmental health and safety, and risk management activities of the University. Responsible for directing the design, implementation and testing of emergency preparedness and business continuity plans for the University.
  3. Researching risk management and insurance trends and information from various resources; reviewing sources for best practices for identified risk confronting the higher education sector; assessing the value of the information in relation to American University; monitoring governmental agencies for information and governmental trends that may impact the University; and attending risk management and insurance classes, seminars, and conferences.
  4. Represent department on various task forces and pro ject teams within the University and with other area universities or associations; prepare annual report to outline goals, accomplishments, operations, and measures of the department. Act as a resource for privacy matters for all university organizational elements.
  5. Maintain accountability for fiscal management of the department. Prepare and submit operational budgets for review and approval, manage effectively with the approved budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered.

Supervisory Responsibility
  • This position reports directly to the CFO, Vice President and Treasurer and works closely with the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Reporting directly to this position include: Associate Director Environmental Health and Safety (Academic), Assistant Director Environmental Health and Safety (Facilities), Associate Director Risk Management and Global Safety, and Director of Global Safety and Compliance, which includes fire safety, emergency preparedness and business continuity.
  • The position interacts with the President’s cabinet, deans, and senior administrators of the university. The position also provides guidance in policy development and statutory and regulatory compliance at all levels of the university.
Work Environment
  • Lead and direct the Compliance, Safety and Enterprise Risk Management department serving a community of approximately 18,000 members, including a residential population in excess of 3,500 and hundreds of visitors every day; responsible for an urban campus environment with more than 50 buildings (residential, retail, academic, commercial, and administrative) on the main and Tenley campus, as well as a major art museum, commercial radio station, and a hotel, conference center and working farm in rural Virginia. Direct and manage department staff and budget.
  • This position is"essential" under the University's personnel policy guidelines and issub ject to be on call during weather or other emergencies or during non-standard working hours, as necessary.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management required.
  • At least 15 years of professional experience overall in the areas of compliance, enterprise risk management,andsafety programs, with at least eight years of progressive management experience is required.
  • Candidate must possess excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to motivate staff; and have strong computer skills.
  • Incumbent must be able to competently interact with culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Business Management preferred.
