Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Associate Director has oversight of all planning, development, implementation, assessment, and coordination for wellbeing, fitness, and aquatic programming; is a vital member of the department leadership team of Campus Recreation ; directly supervises the Assistant Director for Fitness & Aquatics; supervises the Maintenance Tech; indirectly supervises the Coordinator for Fitness and Coordinator for Aquatics; and, oversees the management of 125+ aquatic and fitness staff members.
  • Coordinates wellbeing programs and special events including but not limited to those associated with the Healthy Hawks model.
  • Directs, manages or delegates program administrative functions, including: budget development and management; equipment rotation plans; annual reporting; development of safety/inspection checklists/schedules; equipment purchasing and inventory; participant/program registration; and, documentation for wellbeing programs ensuring confidentiality and proper documentation of fitness assessment and personal training participant records.
  • Directs, organizes and delegates responsibilities related to departmental special events.
  • Coordinates and reports on departmental assessment priorities.
  • Identifies and evaluates potential risks associated with programming and maintaining standards to ensure a safe environment.
  • Evaluates participant concerns or complaints and responds with remedies and solutions.
  • Creates a welcoming environment that promotes wellbeing, diversity, civility, safety, quality and excellence .
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Exercise Science/Physiology or related field;
  • 5-7 years of direct fitness experience at the collegiate recreation level, including Instructional Programming experience (i.e. group fitness) and related national certifications, or equivalent collegiate recreation experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • 7-10 years collegiate recreation programming experience (or recreation programming for a municipal recreation program and related experiences);
  • Demonstrated experience in group fitness programs, personal training and wellness programs. Management of aquatic facilities, programming and supervision of staff;
  • Special Certifications Obtained or to be Obtained following hire:
    • American Red Cross ( ARC ) Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.), Automated External Defibulator (A.E.D.) Certifications, Bloodborne Pathogen Training and ARC First Aid/ CPR / AED Instructor Certification
    • ACE Personal Training & Primary Group Fitness Certifications
    • Yoga and/or Pilates Certification/Training
    • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator, Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor Certifications

The Department of Campus Recreation organizes and administers a variety of structured and self-directed recreational services that enhance the overall wellness of the university community. Our primary goal is to provide quality recreational experiences directed toward positive change in the physical, cognitive and social domains of the university community thus enhancing the overall educational experience. This goal is accomplished by offering a wide variety of recreational activities, conducting educational workshops, and providing professional training. The Department of Campus Recreation provides a multi-faceted program, which includes: Informal Recreation, Group Exercise/Fitness Programs, Competitive Sports (Intramural Sports and Sports Clubs) Seahawk Adventure Programs, Aquatics, and Special Events. Campus Recreation at UNCW takes a “something for everyone” approach to programming.
