Stansell Professorship in Classics and Humanities
Classics and Humanities

Location: San Diego, CA
Open Date: Sep 29, 2022

Description
The Department of Classics and Humanities at San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications for a position in Classics in the 21st Century at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in the 2023/24 academic year. We are seeking a dynamic, engaged scholar who is committed to interdisciplinary approaches, creative research and pedagogy, and program building.

We seek a teacher/scholar in 21st Century Classical Studies with specialization in classical civilization and culture whose research navigates the gap between ancient and contemporary cultural studies as explored by the Humanities side of our departmental curriculum, and whose inclusive study of the ancient world blends elements of traditional philology with innovative methods of new investigative technologies. The holder of this position will teach courses in both Classics (language and literature) and Humanities, and would take a leading role in the development of classes reflecting our evolution towards a more diverse and inclusive interpretation of what studying classics means in the world today.

We are seeking a scholar capable of constructing elements of the classical cannon into exciting and innovative curricular contexts from such areas of study as cultural property and repatriation, the post-traumatic effects of war and its resolution, and/or comparisons of the operations of western and non-western empires. Today, the study of the Classical world stretches from antiquity to the future and encompasses regions far outside the Mediterranean. Ideally this scholar could further enhance teaching of the humanities in contexts past, present, and future: "Faith and Hope," "Understanding Evil," "The Future," and "The Body." Each of these courses might be augmented by, for example, the exploration in big data, or networking software as a means of establishing connections in texts, material culture, and across geographic space, or reconstruction of ancient technology, textiles, and agriculture.

Our campus community is diverse in many ways, including race, religion, color, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, pregnancy, medical condition, and covered veteran status. We strive to build and sustain a welcoming environment for all.

Qualifications
The ideal applicant would be well trained in ancient languages and have expertise in some aspect of the reception of classics in the 21st century: the treatment of classical history or culture in contemporary popular media (films, comics, etc); the ongoing re-use or re-purposing of classical tropes, rhetoric, images, etc.; the rewriting of classical literature for new audiences; classics in the New World; the history of racial and gender bias constructed into the study of Liberal Arts as currently practiced; classics and global crises; and/or the wisdom of pre-industrial arts (e.g., agricultural production, textile making, healing arts, land conservation, religious rite) in current revival.

Candidates must have demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. Please indicate in a separate diversity statement how you meet at least two (2) of these criteria (one-page maximum).
