Job Details

Union College invites applications for the tenure-track Mary H. '80 and Richard K. '80 Templeton Assistant Professor of Computer Science, beginning September 2023.  This endowed position is part of a broader initiative to further strengthen and integrate computer science and engineering with the liberal arts at Union, and it benefits from an assigned annual allowance to support research and travel. We are especially interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about providing undergraduate research opportunities, mentoring of students, and cultivating a diverse learning community.

Our department offers a B.S. in computer science, supports an ABET accredited B.S. in computer engineering with the Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Department, a Digital Media program with the Visual Arts department, and the computational track of the Neuroscience major.  We also participate in several computational minors including digital media, music technology, digital studies, and data analytics. Current faculty research areas include robotics, HCI, NLP, databases, computational complexity, and software design.

At Union, institutional expectations and support are balanced between teaching and research; the ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching, supervising undergraduate research, and sustaining an independent research program.  The specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates who can teach core computer science classes as well as interdisciplinary courses that connect computing to the arts, humanities, and/or social sciences.   The position involves teaching two courses in each of three trimesters.  Preference will be given to applicants who have completed the Ph.D. in computer science or a related area; applicants close to finishing the Ph.D. will be considered. We welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Successful candidates will detail an interest, understanding, and commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging – with preference for a demonstrated ability to contribute to inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in computer science, through education, research, and/or service in their cover letter.

Union College is a highly selective liberal arts and engineering college located in Schenectady, NY, a culturally rich and economically diverse city in New York State's Capital Region, three hours from NYC and Boston. Union offers an exceptional benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision insurance, life and disability coverage, and generous retirement and tuition benefit packages. For more information, please visit our website: https://www.union.edu/human-resources/benefits.

Interested candidates should electronically submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, statement of teaching philosophy, and statement of current research interests. You will be asked to include names and contact information for three references through our online application system at jobs.union.edu. An email will be sent automatically to references requesting a letter of recommendation. We will begin reviewing applications starting November 21, and will continue until the position is filled.
